Jewelry Designs by Ilias Lalaounis and Hans D. Krieger Highlight Kingston Auction House’s Upcoming Sale

Ilias Lalaounis Gold, Ruby, Sapphire and Diamond Lariat Necklace

A lariat necklace is a Y-shaped necklace that has a loop with a linear drop. Instead of a clasp closure, the strand wraps around the neck and runs through a fixture. The necklace gets its name and design inspiration from the culture of the American West. It resembles a type of lasso, a long rope with a large loop at the end. An Ilias Lalaounis 18-karat yellow gold lariat necklace is a key highlight of the upcoming sale, offered by Kingston Auction House. It features two Chimera heads adorned with rubies, sapphires, and diamonds and is adjustable with sliding center section divider. In Greek mythology, the Chimera was believed to be a fearsome, fire-breathing monster with a lion’s head and a goat’s body. Ilias Lalaounis was celebrated for such pioneering styles influenced by Greek history.

Two noteworthy diamond jewelry pieces by Hans D. Krieger also lead the catalog. One is an 18-karat white gold cuff studded with diamonds, and the other is a diamond circle necklace. The international fine jewelry brand was first established in Germany in 1720. Gerhard Richter’s Monumental Abstract and Georg Baselitz’s Pensive Self-Portrait Lead Phillips’ Upcoming Sale

Gerhard Richter Title: Abstraktes Bild

German visual artist Gerhard Richter is renowned for his photorealistic and abstract paintings, glass pieces, and photographs. The contemporary artist builds up his images with detailed patterns based on his innovative techniques. He masterfully blurs and scraps to both mask and uncover preceding layers. One such striking oil on canvas, titled Abstraktes Bild, is a key highlight of the upcoming sale from Phillips. Richter uses his hallmark squeegee tool to swoop in wide vertical, horizontal and diagonal gradations of varied hues. These include strawberry red, sunshine yellow, midnight blue, bright cerulean, turquoise, and lime green. The unique work is of monumental scale, executed in two canvases (left and right panels). Another interesting oil painting is Joan Mitchell’s Blueberry, which illustrates her distinctive and vigorous style. In this electrifying work, she tactfully balances the central brushstrokes of thick and expansive blue with waves of pale pink on the edges.

Georg Baselitz’s pensive self-portrait Ein Roter also leads the listings. Although the red beret suggests of Communist connection, the depiction lacks any sense of nationalism. The man’s expression is contemplative and the background appears deserted. Visit Phillips to view the complete catalog and register to bid in the upcoming 20th Century & Contemporary Art Evening sale.

Doyle’s Upcoming Auction to Feature Artworks by Kenneth Noland and John Atkinson Grimshaw

Kenneth Noland Chalice, 1959

American artist Kenneth Noland was known for his circle paintings and postwar abstract art. He studied art at the Black Mountain College, North Carolina, where he learned neoplasticism and the work of Piet Mondrian from Professor Ilya Bolotowsky. Noland’s paintings explored a range of chevrons, circles, stripes, and shaped canvases. The late art critic of The New York Times Hilton Kramer once said, “An art of this sort places a very heavy burden on the artist’s sensibility for color, of course—on his ability to come up, again and again, with fresh and striking combinations that both capture and sustain our attention and provide the requisite pleasures…Mr. Noland is unquestionably a master.” An acrylic on canvas titled Chalice by Kenneth Noland will be highlighted in this upcoming sale, offered by Doyle. Rendered in the year 1959, the artwork is simple and reflects his true area of interest: color and field.

The Waning Glory of the Year, by John Atkinson Grimshaw, is another notable lot. Best known for his realistic, nocturnal landscapes, Grimshaw often deployed Victorian photographic techniques, sometimes painting over photographs. The available oil on canvas piece was made in 1882. Deborah Butterfield’s sculpture Untitled Horse will also be available. This Doyle event presents over 130 pieces of contemporary and post-war paintings and sculptures. Works by William Herbert Dunton, Mark Maggiori, and More at Coeur d’Alene Art Auction

William Herbert Dunton — J-D Outfit (ca. 1906)

The upcoming Coeur d’Alene Art Auction will feature Western paintings and sculptures from celebrated artists of the past and present, including William Herbert Dunton and Mark Maggiori. Leading the sale is a 1906 oil painting by William Herbert Dunton titled J-D Outfit. A founder of the Taos Society of Artists, William Herbert Dunton was well known for his paintings of cowboys and landscape scenes of the West and Southwest. His portrayal of the West was underlined by a feeling of urgency, as he was sensing the growing influence of modernity. The present painting illustrates the artist’s lifelong interest in hunting and animals, as well as his ability to capture action through painting.

Another notable work in the catalog is an oil painting by Mark Maggiori, titled The Watering Hole. In his paintings, the artist often portrays a lone cowboy silhouetted against textures of clouds, rendered in a contemporary style. Landscape paintings by Maggiori are particularly noted for their sublime, layered, and textured clouds, magnifying and dwarfing his subject matter. Also of note in this auction is Adobe House, Taos, an oil painting by Victor Higgins. As a member of the Taos Society, Victor Higgins showed an unmatched understanding and appreciation of the American and European Modernist movements in his portrayal of the Southwest’s landscape and people. Higgins experimented with abstraction in his still lifes and landscapes, especially in depicting adobe houses, mountains, and flowers. A 0.98-carat engagement ring with a GIA report will lead the upcoming New York City Estate Auction, offered by Auctions at Showplace. It is brightly polished, featuring a centered prong set and round brilliant-cut diamond. The GIA diamond report states that the solitaire has D color and VVS2 clarity. He was expected to take on the family tradition and become a Russian naval officer. Instead, Erté became a pioneering figure of the Art Deco period. He designed several covers for Harper’s Bazaar, stage costumes for performers like Mata Hari, and even limited-edition bottle designs for Courvoisier to show the different stages of the cognac-making process. The auction will also offer artistic bowls from Erté. View the complete catalog of the New York City Estate Auction, November 19 and find other online auctions by visiting Bidsquare.

Basquiat Masterpiece, Abstract Works by Richter and Mitchell Available in Sotheby’s Fall Contemporary Evening Auction

Jean-Michel Basquiat Self-Portrait as a Heel (Part Two)

Sotheby’s mid-November Contemporary Evening Auction explores the most radical and transformative art movements of the late 20th century. Represented in the catalog are works of Color Field painting, Pop Art, Minimalism, and more. A self-portrait by Jean-Michel Basquiat leads the listings. Titled Self-Portrait as a Heel (Part Two), this acrylic and oilstick on canvas is dominated by an electric green background. In front, fragmented body parts appear from multiple angles. Basquiat painted this piece between 1982 and 1983, during a visit to Los Angeles. Shortly before, he made his breakthrough in the mainstream art world, and his fame was spiking when he created a series of self-portraits. Responding to this newfound fame, Basquiat used his art to explore his role as a Black man in a predominately white art world.

Another notable lot in this upcoming auction is an abstract 1997 work by Gerhard Richter. This work belongs to the artist’s Abstraktes Bilder series from the 1990s. Richter executed the present work on an immense square canvas using rich shades of wine red and navy blue. Utilizing his signature squeegee, Richter built up layers of paint on the canvas, scraping them back to reveal glimmers of color beneath. Bidders can consider other abstract works by Joan Mitchell and Lucio Fontana, as well as paintings by Barkley L. Hendricks and Wayne Thiebaud. Visit Sotheby’s website for more information on the upcoming Contemporary Evening Auction and to register to bid.

Rev. Matthew William Peters Painting & Rare Sculpture by Johann Ferdinand Preiss Lead 1stbid’s Upcoming Auction

Rev. Matthew William Peters, Oil on Canvas

An oil on canvas painting titled Aladdin’s Lamp by Rev. Matthew William Peters is leading the Curated Collection of Rugs & Art Auction, presented by 1stbid. William Peters (1742 – 1814) was an English portrait and genre painter. He later became an Anglican clergyman and chaplain to King George IV. Peters often chose historical scenes, portraits, and risqué figures as his subjects. Born in the Isle of Wight, he received artistic training in Dublin.

Among sculptures, a bronze statue titled The Autumn Dancer by Johann Ferdinand Preiss is notable. Preiss (1882 – 1943) was a German sculptor and considered one of the most influential sculptors of the Art Deco period. The Autumn Dancer, designed by the artist around 1925, is composed of bronze and bone on an onyx and marble base. It is an excellent example of the Art Deco style. A Tiffany dragonfly floor lamp with leaded glass & bronze shade is another notable lot in the sale. Collectors can also find delicate 19th-century Caucasian scatter rugs and Persian/Turkish silk rugs in the catalog. Swann’s Contemporary Art Auction Features Sam Szafran, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and Keith Haring Works

SAM SZAFRAN Untitled.

The tiny spaces that Sam Szafran (1934 – 2019) occupied were his world, captured on canvas with thousands of details. A dizzying perspective of stairs captured in an untitled painting from 1980 by Szafran is leading the Contemporary Art auction from Swann Auction Galleries. It is a color pastel on board, signed by Szafran. He was a Jewish-Polish artist who grew up witnessing the disasters of World War II. As an artist, he preferred solitude, focusing on his own existence and inner states to give rise to his favorite themes like plants, staircases, and workshops in pastel and then watercolor. This artwork distorts and deconstructs the viewer’s perspective.

A crayon, pen and ink, and wash on card artwork, drawn in 1926 by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880 – 1938) is another highlight in the sale. As a self- trained artist, Kirchner founded the artists’ group Die Brücke along with Fritz Bleyl, Erich Heckel, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. The group gave birth to German Expressionism. They made life-drawings from nude models in unselfconscious, informal poses in their communal studio, decorated with non-Western art and erotic images. They rejected academic art as stultifying and started originating works that were emotionally expressive, like the works of Vincent van Gogh and Edvard Munch. Their art still resonates with the contemporary originality they held in the 1910s and 1920s. View the complete catalog of the Contemporary Art auction by visiting Swann Auction Galleries.

Works Attributed to Thomas Hart Benton and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff Highlight 500 Gallery’s Upcoming Sale

Thomas Hart Benton, Attributed The Year of Peril

The upcoming Prestige Collection: Modern & Impressionist sale at 500 Gallery will present over 250 lots of masterpieces representing Abstraction, Realism, Surrealism, and Pop Art styles. Leading the sale is The Year of Peril, a painting attributed to Thomas Hart Benton (1889 – 1975). Considered one of the greatest pre-war Regionalist painters, Benton’s vibrant landscapes, portrayal of Midwestern people, and depictions of daily life received a great deal of attention. The available oil on canvas features various motifs from Benton’s Year of Peril series (1941 – 1942), which he created soon after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The Year of Peril: A Series of War Paintings highlighted the threat to American ideals by Nazism and fascism.

Another top lot in this sale is a painting attributed to Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, titled Two Faces. Rottluff, a German Expressionist painter and printmaker, was one of the four founders of the artist group Die Brücke. He is best known for his Expressionist landscapes and nudes. The available work is characterized by thick brushstrokes and a bold color palette. It shows a woman’s face and a ghostly face in the background. This oil-on-panel piece was completed around 1914 and formerly belonged to a North Carolina estate. It is hand-signed and unframed.
