Spanish American painter Esteban Vicente Pérez was a first generation New York School Abstract Expressionist. Having regularly visited the Prado Museum in childhood with his father, Vicente developed a great love for art. Harmony, an oil painting on canvas by the artist, is a key highlight of the upcoming auction from Swann Auction Galleries. It is a non-representational composition attained with bold, thickly painted impasto. The nebulous forms suspended in space are influenced by the likes of Velasquez and Goya. Three works by Raymond Jonson, including two landscapes, also lead the listings. Jonson painted September in Eldora when he visited the place with his wife in 1917. He had accomplished many of his plein air paintings then and also received his first solo exhibition opportunity at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Another noteworthy lot in the catalog comprises two paintings by Alfred Henry Maurer. One is a still life titled Croissants et Brioches, and the other is an untitled landscape. The Modernist painter’s works received recognition only after his death by suicide. Lab-grown diamonds are human-made synthetic stones produced in a controlled environment in contrast to naturally-formed ones. They are made of the same material as the ones found in nature with identical physical and chemical characteristics. Antoine Lavoisier, the central figure in modern chemistry, first discovered this similarity. Thereafter, several scientists, including James Ballantyne Hannay and Ferdinand Frédéric Henri Moissan, attempted to convert low-cost forms of carbon into diamond. The upcoming sale from Lab Grown Auctions will offer a variety of laboratory-created diamonds. One of the highlights is a pair of diamonds, weighing 35.50 carats. The cushion cut diamonds are IGI graded and have a “crushed ice” or needle-like facet pattern. Another noteworthy piece is a heart cut gem, weighing 21.53 carats. The heart-shape diamond was first mentioned in the 15th century in a correspondence between the Duke of Milan and his confidante.
An oval cut stone of 17.23 carats also leads the listings. The elongated form is a combination of the classic round brilliant and distinctive modern styles. It appears larger than its actual carat weight. This upcoming sale at Brunk Auctions will feature an oil painting by William S. Schwartz, titled A Waterfall in Wisconsin. Schwartz considered himself a “romantic modernist,” drawing inspiration from Cubism, Surrealism, and Constructivism while refusing to conform to trends. In his paintings, the artist often used driftwood abstractions, biomorphic shapes, and narrative symbols to convey his imagination. Schwartz’s paintings, in particular landscapes and abstractions, were widely acclaimed for their use of bright, saturated hues, part of which reflected El Greco’s influence. Another notable mixed-media painting in the catalog is Francis Hopkinson Smith’s Venice. A self-taught artist, Smith specialized in charcoal and watercolor paintings as well as plein-air landscapes. He earned recognition for his watercolors and charcoal drawings, which were featured in several of his books on travel.

The Lifetime Perfume Bottle Collection Benefit auction, presented by Helmuth Stone Gallery, will offer over 400 perfume bottles donated to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. The proceeds will be used for the installation of the church’s roof. Leading the auction is a Morney – June Roses Boule flacon bottle by Andre Jolivet. The available perfume bottle was made in 1911 and comes with its original box. Morny was a perfumery established in 1905 by chemist-perfumer Sidney F. Goss in London. André Jolivet was a French glass designer who created prototype bottles like those available in this auction. He was famous for creating pearlized finished bottles for Frivolia, Gueldy, and Firefly in the 1920s.
