Paintings, Furniture, Decorative Arts & Fine Rugs

Melvin Miller. Floral Still Life

This upcoming auction of 464 lots includes an untitled work of Figurative Abstraction by Dutch painter Karel Appel. In 1948, Appel and his friends, Corneille and Constant, founded the Cobra Movement, supporting gesturalism in the 20th century. The movement was driven by opposition to academic art. Many of Appel’s known paintings employ symbols and informal abstraction.

The upcoming Paintings, Furniture, Decorative Arts, & Fine Rugs auction, offered by Alex Cooper Auctioneers, will also present an example of Andy Warhol’s work. Experimenting with various forms of media ranging from painting and sculpture to film and silkscreening, Andy Warhol was one of the most prominent Pop artists of the 1960s. The available piece, titled Campbell’s Soup Cans, became one of the most influential works of his career. The hand-painted label would later be transitioned to photo-transferred paintings. He claimed that the soup can was his ideal work “because everybody only does one painting anyway.” Interested collectors can explore the full listings for this auction and register to bid online on Bidsquare.

The piece shows a boyish Cupid bent over the handlebars of his bicycle with a pink drape streaming behind him.

Beyond decorative arts, the sale also offers over 50 lots of fine art and jewelry. One of the key items is a painting by British artist J. M. W. Turner. American + European Art

After Frederic Remington, The Mountain Man

The sculpture titled Crest of the Wave exemplifies the most important period in the career of Harriet Whitney Frishmuth, an often-overlooked American sculptor of the early 20th century. Her work represents the influence of the New York dance scene. The standing pose of the available figure also reflects the artist’s signature style of the 1920s. This 1925 piece is a standout lot in the upcoming American + European Art Auction, presented by Rago. The dancer balances on tiptoe with her back arched and her hand over her head. She is poised between movements as she dances over the crest of a wave.

Among many American and European artists, the sale will offer examples of Paul Howard Manship’s work. He was an Art Deco sculptor whose modern style and subjects were largely inspired by classical forms. The featured bronze sculpture is titled Tortoise. Manship designed this and many other animal sculptures for the gates of New York’s Bronx Zoo. Alongside sculpture, the upcoming sale will also offer a range of drawings, watercolors, mixed media works, paintings, and collectibles. Asian Works of Art

A Carved White Jade Pendant

The Guardian Lions, believed to be a symbol of protection, enjoy reverence in Chinese mythology and feng-shui. Statues of the lions can be spotted guarding the entrances of historical temples, mausoleums, and residences of the elite. Called foo lions in the West, these imperial beings represent balance and harmony. A set of two wooden foo lions will be available in the upcoming auction of Asian Works of Art, presented by Hindman. Baseball – Sports – Historical

19h Century Flag Drum w-Drum Sticks

Babe Ruth made his second-to-last public appearance at Yale University in June of 1948, a couple of months before dying of cancer. The police officer guarding him that night was a man named Salvatore Adinolfi. During the event, the Hall of Famer looked over to Adinolfi and asked if he had kids. When the officer said yes, Ruth pulled a ball out of his pocket and signed it. This Ruth-signed baseball comes to auction from the collection of Adinolfi’s grandson as part of the Baseball, Sports, and Historical event, presented by New Haven Auctions.

Featured in the sale are several lots of photographs. This includes a photo diary from the mid-to-late 19th century. Pictures of Martin Van Buren, P.T. Barnum, and Abraham Lincoln are preserved in this 170-photo collection. Baseball memorabilia collectors will find a tintype of two African American baseball players. In the photo, the players carry pocket watches, and their jerseys read “Ironshire,” which the auction house believes refers to Ironshire, Maryland.
