This upcoming auction of 464 lots includes an untitled work of Figurative Abstraction by Dutch painter Karel Appel. In 1948, Appel and his friends, Corneille and Constant, founded the Cobra Movement, supporting gesturalism in the 20th century. The movement was driven by opposition to academic art. Many of Appel’s known paintings employ symbols and informal abstraction.
The upcoming Paintings, Furniture, Decorative Arts, & Fine Rugs auction, offered by Alex Cooper Auctioneers, will also present an example of Andy Warhol’s work. Experimenting with various forms of media ranging from painting and sculpture to film and silkscreening, Andy Warhol was one of the most prominent Pop artists of the 1960s. The available piece, titled Campbell’s Soup Cans, became one of the most influential works of his career. The hand-painted label would later be transitioned to photo-transferred paintings. He claimed that the soup can was his ideal work “because everybody only does one painting anyway.” Interested collectors can explore the full listings for this auction and register to bid online on Bidsquare.
