Jewelry Week / Jewels – Session 4

A 18K white gold and diamond ring

Born to a shoemaker family, self-taught Italian sculptor Giacomo Manzù adhered to three principle motifs: religious iconography, life-size nudes, and the painter with his model. He was one of the leading 20th-century sculptors of religious statues. Among his best-known works are his relief panels for European churches, including the Porta Della Morte, the bronze doors for St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The upcoming auction, presented by Finarte, highlights a medal by Manzù. The 18-karat yellow gold medal shows a flight of doves.

Another highlight of the auction is an amethyst ring. According to Greek legends, the stone gets its purple color from Dionysus, the god of intoxication and celebration. The stone was believed to prevent drunkenness, overindulgence, and evil thoughts. A Cartier lighter is also available. Launched in 1968, the “Oval” was the first gas cigarette lighter in the world. Cartier led the industry in producing this oval-shaped lighter, which is now a standard model. The auction also offers jewelry from Tiffany & Co., Chimento, and Piccard Lucien. C2: The Rites of Summer I

Roberto Fernandez Balbuena

American Realist sculptor John DeAndrea graduated from Colorado University, Boulder in 1965. At that time, abstraction dominated the American art scene. For a period, DeAndrea worked on abstract figurative pieces to fit in. However, because of his interest in the human form, he started working on lifecasting techniques to create hyper-realist sculptures instead. “John DeAndrea established a new level of literal realism within the ongoing tradition of figurative sculpture,” writes Roberta Panvanelli in The Color of Life. The first session of the upcoming C2: The Rites of Summer auction, presented by Capsule Auctions, features a sculpture by DeAndrea. Titled Carol, the bust shows a woman with her eyes downcast and her hair pulled back in a tight bun.

Born in 1925, Robert R. Bliss’ first figurative paintings were mostly self-portraits. Inspired by ancient Roman nude statues, his later work often captured detailed nudes. Several examples of his paintings will be offered in this event, including Standing Boy, Boy At the Beach, and Male Nude. A Lacroix-Tubular desk lamp from Jean Boris is also among the standout pieces in this sale, which will include over l50 lots. Boris started his career in 1920. He was known for his Modernist approach to lighting works and metal. View the full listings for this event and register to bid online by visiting Capsule.

Antiquities | Pre-Columbian | Ethnographic

Egyptian Predynastic Naqada III Basalt Vessel

The first Russian icons appeared in the 12th century. During the same period, the tradition of covering icons with metal barriers called oklads was also popularized. An oklad usually covers the entire icon except the face, hands, and feet. Typically, it is more than a decoration and a shield against sunlight and damage. Each material used for making an oklad has a deeper meaning: gold symbolizes God’s grace, silver stands for purity of the soul and holiness, and gems point at spiritual virtues. A key lot in the upcoming Antiquities | Pre-Columbian | Ethnographic sale, presented by Artemis Gallery, is a Russian Cosmas and Damian oklad. The 19th-century silver oklad shows two brothers holding medicine boxes and crowned with sunburst halos.

A first-century CE Egyptian situla is highlighted in the sale. The situla, a conical vessel with a pointed base and tall body, played an important role in ancient Egyptian religious ceremonies. Situlae were typically formed from either bronze or hardwood and featured raised decorative motifs of animals or deities. The available piece is hand-carved from honey-yellow alabaster with subtle inclusions of light gray and dark beige.

The auction offers 200 lots of decorative arts, jewelry, and ethnographic art. A bronze sculpture by Karen Crain will be offered as well. Titled Chaste, the sculpture shows a woman holding a long towel or robe against her body as she walks forward. Visit Bidsquare for more information and to register to bid.

Auction of Books by Explorers, Travelers, Maps, and Landscapes

San Agustín, Gaspar de. Conquests of the Philippine Islands. Madrid- Printing of Manuel Ruiz de Murga, 1698

John Phillips was a British mining engineer whose work brought him to Mexico in 1840. As he traveled through the country, he discovered its landscape. Together with a young British lithographer named Alfred Rider, Phillips published Mexico Illustrated in Twenty-Six Drawings. The work kindled interest in distant lands among Europeans. Seven lithographic works by John Phillips and Alfred Rider are featured in the upcoming Auction of Books by Explorers, Travelers, Maps, and Landscapes sale, presented by Morton Subastas. The lithographs featured in this auction depict the tropical landscape of Mexico in a new light.

Another work that was widely read and was well-received by Europeans was titled Amerika, sometimes called The New and Unknown World: or Description of America. The publisher was Arnoldus Montanus, a Dutch explorer, missionary, and theologian. As he had never traveled beyond Europe, his knowledge about the New World was based on descriptions from other travelers who painted imaginary images of the Americas. Similar lots, along with maps and manuscripts from the library collection of Roberto L. Mayer, are available online at Bidsquare.

Books and Manuscripts, Including Americana

[ARTIST'S BOOK]. DALI, Salvador (1904-1989). Paternoster. Milan- Rizzoli Editore, 1966

Hindman’s upcoming auction of Books and Manuscripts, including Americana, is sourced in part from the collection of Rhoda H. Clark, a businesswoman and book collector. Clark helmed the Monastary Hill book bindery after four generations. Available items from her collection include examples of Monastery Hill bindings, such as the complete works of Honore de Balzac, A Christmas Carol in prose by Charles Dickens, Hawaii by James Michener, and more.

Other rare bindings in the sale include a ten-volume set of the complete writings of Walt Whitman. The set on offer is number ten of ten copies on Japanese vellum of the “Author’s Autograph Edition.” Bound into one of the books is an original autographed letter written by Whitman to an unnamed recipient.

Beyond books, there are notable Americana items, such as letters, documents, and signatures from American Supreme Court Justices. One of the leading lots offers over 200 items signed by Supreme Court Justices, from John Jay through William Rehnquist. The auction house describes the set as “the most complete collection to appear on the market.” Other Justices represented in the set include Sandra Day O’Connor, David Souter, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonja Sotomayor, John McKinley, and James Iredell. The Swatch Collection

Remarkable and extremely rare collection of 1.241 Swatch

The upcoming one-lot auction, presented by Finarte, offers bidders a collection of 1,241 Swatch watches. Combined, these watches represent many of the limited editions and production models from the Swiss watchmaker’s first 13 years, 1983 to 1996. This includes a Jellyfish Swatch watch. Only 50 exclusive copies of the Jellyfish were produced for the winners of the 1985 Alternative Miss World, a counterculture beauty pageant. Also available as part of this lot is a Swatch watch signed by Pop artist Keith Haring. He partnered with the watch brand to produce four models with a total circulation of 9,999 copies. Rounding out the highlighted pieces is a 6 Black Puff watch. This 1988 model required wearers to blow puffs of fur out of the way to read the time.

Established in 1983, Swatch aimed to reverse the watchmaking industry’s shift from Swiss-made products to those from Japan and Hong Kong. To accomplish this, Swatch focused less on the utility of watches and more on aesthetics. “A $5 watch tells time every bit as well as a $30,000 watch,” wrote Edward de Bono on the market shift. “The Swatch was not selling time so much as fun and costume jewelry.” Those interested in this collection can register to bid on Bidsquare.

In the 1960s, Rolex replaced its Chronograph watch series with a more cosmetic version called the Rolex Cosmograph.
