Rolex, Ulysse Nardin, and Patek Philippe Watches Highlight Upcoming Christie’s Auction

ULYSSE NARDIN, MOONSTRUCK, ASTRONOMICAL COMPLICATIONS, 18K PINK GOLD & CERAMIC, REF. 1062-113, LIMITED EDITION NO. 033 OF 500

The Rolex Daytona Cosmograph tracks miles per hour, starting at 50mph and going as high as 200mph, and also shows expired time. These two features, among others, make it a useful watch for race car drivers. An example of the Cosmograph from 1973 is featured in the upcoming Watches Online auction, presented by Christie’s. This watch was previously owned by the late driver and race car engineer Carroll Smith. His career accomplishments included prepping GT40s that would win both the 1966 and 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Those interested in newer watches can consider a Ulysse Nardin Moonstruck ref. 1062-113 produced in the last decade. As its name implies, the Moonstruck’s functions particularly benefit those interested in astronomy. Key features include dials showing the location of Earth’s Moon and Sun in relationship to the planet. Meanwhile, collectors who prefer antique watches will find a Patek Philippe Calatrava from 1961. The Calatrava series has a minimalistic design and is only intended to show the time. Those interested in this or any other lot can register to bid on the Christie’s website.

No Reserve Single Owner Los Angeles Collector, Session II

Chinese Carnelian Covered Box

In ancient China, powdered tobacco was widely used as a treatment for mild illness. This tobacco was stored in snuff bottles. In the 18th century, these bottles appeared as a status symbol and were manufactured at a much greater volume for the public. The second session of the Single Owner Los Angeles Collector auction, offered by I.M. Chait Gallery, presents eight sets of snuff bottles in porcelain, jade, and agate.

The sale will also present a Chinese embroidered silk robe that dates back to the 19th century. In 1759, the dragon robe became a mark of stature, worn only by members of the Imperial family. The available cobalt blue robe was designed with mountains and dragons. The dragons are surrounded by ling zhi clouds. Also featured in the auction is an enameled porcelain figure of the revered artist Liu Hia. A pioneer of Chinese modern art, Liu was counted among “The Four Great Academy Presidents.” Register on Bidsquare to find more information and bid for these items.

Collector’s Auction, Day 1

Art Deco Silvered Sculpture, Dancer & Tambourine By Andre Gilbert

Featured on the first day of the upcoming Collector’s Auction, offered by Whitley’s Auctioneers, is an Art Deco dancer sculpture from Andre Gilbert. One of the first English sculptors to enroll at the École des Beaux-Arts, Gilbert’s experience at the university encouraged him to travel to Rome and continue his work with marble sculpture. In the available piece, Gilbert depicts a Neoclassical dancer. The artist captures the movement of the dancer, who can be seen holding a tambourine. This piece was produced around 1930.

A Royal Doulton flambé vase can also be found in the auction. Royal Doulton was founded by John Doulton in 1815 as Doulton & Co. Tim Thompson Oil on Canvas Summer in the Sound - Steamer Nantucket Passing Brant Point Lighthouse

Antonio Jacobsen was a prolific maritime painter well known for his depictions of American vessels. As a child, Jacobsen learned music from his father. However, his true love was the sea. Jacobsen began painting the doors of safes with elaborate harbor scenes. These works landed him a commission for painting the vessels of the Old Dominion Steamship Company, which launched his career. The upcoming Rafael Osona Auctions event presents America’s Cup Trials, 1871, Yacht Dauntless by Jacobsen. The available oil painting features the artist’s signature vessel profile.

American Presidential Memorabilia Comes to Auction with Bonhams

John F. Kennedy White 1963 Lincoln Limo One That Carried Him The Morning Of November 22, 1963

Following the September 11th, 2001 attacks, collector Jim Warlick became concerned that children would stop visiting Washington, D.C. to learn about American history. He decided to take his collection of American presidential memorabilia on the road to fill the need. 20 years later, part of his “American Presidential Experience” traveling exhibition will come to auction with Bonhams. Among the leading lots is a 1963 Lincoln Continental convertible that transported President John F. Kennedy from a hotel to the airport the morning of his assassination. The four-door white convertible has a restored engine and original red leather interior. Other JFK items in the auction include his Air Force One bomber jacket, the Lincoln Continental Mark V that he used as his personal vehicle, and the steel-nibbed pen that Kennedy used to create the Peace Corps.

Roy Lichtenstein’s signature screenprint titled The Oval Office leads the fine art selections. Signed and dated in 1992, this distinct view of the President’s working space was commissioned by the Artist for Freedom of Expression project. Several prints by Andy Warhol are available as well. Cars from Aston Martin, Bentley, and Others Offered by Bonhams

1969 FORD MUSTANG BOSS 429

In 1930, Bentley aimed to produce a car that could go “100mph without noise,” according to their advertising. This was particularly ambitious because, behind the scenes, Bentley was on the verge of bankruptcy. The company made good on their promise with the 1931 Bentley 8-Liter Tourer, an example of which highlights the upcoming Collectors’ Motorcars event, presented by Bonhams. This is one of only 100 8-Liter Tourers produced before Bentley’s bankruptcy became official.

Collectors interested in the early years of automobiles can also consider the 1913 Locomobile Model 38. This example was restored in the 1960s to include such features as a modern starting system. In 2017, it completed a 600+ mile tour, informally referred to as the “brass and grass” tour. Those seeking more contemporary automobiles will find a 2009 Aston Martin DBS Coupe. The DBS series made its debut to the public in 2006’s Casino Royale, when James Bond wins it in a high-stakes poker game. Bond would ride a DBS once again at the start of Quantum of Solace (2008). This example comes to auction with fewer than 10,000 miles on it. Register to bid in this sale by visiting the Bonhams website.

No Reserve Single Owner Los Angeles Collector, Session I

Chinese Enameled Porcelain Covered Container

The production of porcelain decorative art reached its height during the Chinese Ming dynasty. These porcelain pieces, particularly moon flasks, were often made in a traditional style. Moon flasks were mainly designed with symbolic floral motifs that reflected the passing seasons. A blue-glazed moon flask vase is among the highlights of the upcoming Single Owner Los Angeles Collector auction, presented by I. M. Chait Gallery. This piece has a circular body with a narrow cylindrical neck. The front shows a dragon motif in white.

Another key lot is a Japanese painting in the style of Utamaro. A printmaker and painter, Utamaro was known for his skillful portraits of women. He was also one of the most prominent artists in the ukiyo-e genre. Utamaro’s style blended elements from the emaki (picture scrolls) produced in the Kamakura period with the mature decorative style of the Tokugawa period. The featured painting is a portrait of a geisha, a traditional entertainer who attends to guests during meals, banquets, and other occasions.
