In the upcoming Photographs auction, Andreas Gursky’s São Paulo, Sé is one of the highlighted lots. Many of Gursky’s noted works study human behavior in private and public spaces. The offered piece from 2002 was captured at the city’s multi-level metro station. The photograph is split horizontally by six crowded train platforms.
The upcoming Phillips event offers over 200 photographs in the catalog. This includes American photographer Irving Penn’s Fishmonger, London, a platinum palladium print from 1950. Penn was among the influential photographers of the 20th century who took a distinct, minimalistic approach to fashion. He often photographed his subjects against gray or white backgrounds, “allowing the viewers to focus on their pose, expressions, and style.” In the portrait, the fishmonger smiles at the viewer, holding a fish and a rugged piece of cloth on either side. Bidders can also consider Candida Höfer’s chromogenic print of Pierpont Morgan Library in New York. Höfer is a renowned interior photographer with an interest in capturing grand libraries. Emmanuel Villanis was a prominent 19th-century sculptor known for the realism in his bronze works. His style mostly used asymmetrical lines, including flower stalks and vine tendrils, to reflect the objects present in nature. Many of Villanis’ works were based on characters from mythology and literature. The upcoming Fine Furniture, Decorative Arts, and Silver Online Only Auction, presented by Hindman, offers an 1890 carved marble bust of a woman created in Villanis’ style. In this sculpture, the influence of traditional Neoclassicism and the Art Nouveau movement can be observed.
The auction also includes a Napoleon III two-tier table from the early 20th century. The Napoleon III style was popular between 1844 and 1870 and used elements of the Rococo style. Another 20th-century piece is a wallpaper panel mounted on a floor screen. The panel depicts a landscape view of North America. To view the full catalog and register to bid, visit Bidsquare.
The story of Atala and Chactas was an 1801 literary success that propelled its author, François-René de Chateaubriand, to both fame and political appointments. It told of a Native American man who was freed from his kidnapping by a compassionate Christian woman named Atala, who was the daughter of a local chief. Chateaubriand’s story is visually depicted on a 19th-century French Empire mantel clock, presented in Akiba Antiques’ upcoming Eclectic Collection of East Coast Estates auction. Executed in gilt bronze, a panel below the central figures and clock dial shows the tragic ending of the main characters.
Mantel clock collectors will also find a bronze and rouge marble piece in the listings. This clock shows a bearded Hercules carrying the world on his shoulders and features an eight-day movement. Another timepiece on offer is a Patek Philippe World Time ref. 5131J-001 wristwatch. Designed in the 1930s, the World Time watch has long attracted attention for its simultaneous display of 24 time zones. The available watch is among the most recent editions. It is centered on a cloisonné enamel version of the world map. The globetrotting wearer can see the time everywhere from Paris to Auckland around the edge of the dial.
Other key items in the auction include a pair of antique vases from Moser, one of the Czech Republic’s leading glass manufacturers. More than 160 years old, the company specializes in traditional Czech crystal and glass. The available vases were made in the late 19th or early 20th century and are covered in enamel bees, fireflies, and multicolored leaves. Fine art from Barry Leighton-Jones, Constant Joseph Brochart, and Marc Chagall will be up for bid as well. Visit LiveAuctioneers for the complete catalog and to place a bid.
Sir Robert F. Marx was best known for his scuba diving and marine archeology expertise. He discovered over 5,000 shipwrecks over his career. His first was the SS Winfield Scott in California, which he traded for gold coins. Several lots featuring artifacts from Marx’s estate are available in the upcoming Marion Antique Auctions sale. Particularly highlighted is an ancient Roman amphora vase, possibly from 200 to 300 CE. It features two handles and sits on a wooden stand. The piece, like other lots from the same provenance, appears to be from a shipwreck.
A three-volume set of History of the Indian Tribes of North America is also part of the sale. These books were respectively published in 1848, 1849, and 1850. 120 portraits by Thomas McKenney and James Hall are featured in this first Octavo edition. The upcoming October auction from Fine Estate offers a selection of decorative and ethnographic art. Among the highlighted lots is a pair of rare huanghuali horseshoe-back armchairs from the late 20th century. Huanghuali wood first originated in the Yaxian region of Hainan in China. Often used in Chinese furniture, the popularity of the wood can be dated back to the Ming dynasty. Each available chair features a curving back-splat above the seat. An inset single panel timber rests above a stepped apron.
Another lot of interest is a 10th-century Indian sandstone statue of Vishnu, an important Hindu deity. The sculpture portrays Vishnu on a stepped base holding various items. The latest auction from Pook & Pook includes a broad selection of fine art, jewelry, collectibles, posters, and more. Of the art in the sale is an Impressionist landscape piece. Though the auction house does not indicate that the artist is known, the signature “G. Inness” may indicate that it is the work of George Inness, an American landscape painter from Newburgh, New York. In his mature work, he was best known for pieces leaning toward the Tonalist movement, but he was also influenced by the Hudson River School, the Barbizon school, and the theology of Emanuel Swedenborg. The painting is heavily varnished and is a likely candidate for restoration.
Leading the manufactured goods in the auction is a set of two tabletop jukebox music selectors from the Seeburg Corporation. At one time, they were one of the big four coin-op phonograph companies with AMI, Wurlitzer, and Rock-Ola. When they were still popular items at soda-shops and restaurants, the Seeburg name was synonymous with jukeboxes. Other items in the sale include diamond and platinum jewelry, an oak watch-makers chest from Swartchild & Co., a Dodgem bumper car advertisement, and more. An American photographer, George Krause began his artistic journey while serving in the U.S. Army (1957-59). In his spare time, he would move around the neighborhoods of South Carolina and photograph the cultural landscapes. One of the key highlights of the upcoming Photographs from the W.M. Hunt Collection sale, presented by Christie’s, is an arresting portrait by Krause titled Fountainhead from 1970. It is a gelatin silver print with a signature and date written in pencil. Another key lot is Richard Avedon’s photograph of Sophia Loren (1970). The hairstyle by Ara Gallant and the overall hazy impact adds a slightly surreal look to the image. The gelatin silver print is flush-mounted on linen. Specializing in fashion and portrait photography, Avedon worked for well-known publications such as Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue in his long career. Another significant photograph is Phyllis Galembo’s Brazil (1987). Like many of her striking portraits, this one shows the subjects dressed in elaborate traditional outfits.
A photography collector, curator, and consultant, W.M. Hunt has collected photographs for more than three decades. This personal collection is noteworthy for the obscured look or closed eyes of all the subjects. It includes works of masters as well as rising photographers. The collection comprises various styles of portraiture as well. To view the complete catalog and register to bid online, visit Christie’s.
Partners Edward Howard, David Davis, and Aaron Lufkin Dennison intended to make completely interchangeable clock movement parts. This lead to the formation of the Boston Watch Company in 1849. However, due to low sales, the company closed a decade later. Following its demise, Howard partnered with Charles Rice to create the E. Howard & Co. watch company, which became known for its creation of industry guidelines. The upcoming Showplace auction presents an Art Deco E. Howard & Co. 14-karat white gold pocket watch. This 1920s open-faced watch has a silver dial with black Arabic numbers.
Another highlight is a 1919 Gorham American Fairfax flatware set. This “S” monogram set is a classic Gorham design composed of clean lines and high polish. The auction also features Tiffany & Co. jewelry, including a silver pearl necklace. It was designed by Paloma Picasso, the daughter of the famous artist. The multi-strand, cultured freshwater pearl torsade is a reimagined classic design. The New York City Estate Auction also offers a 1912 French 20 francs rooster gold coin, a Tiffany Studios bronze inkwell, and Chanel handbags. Interested collectors can explore the full listings and register to bid online on Bidsquare.
The works available in the 21st Annual
Gala & Glass Auction represent strong examples of Modern and contemporary
glass sculpture. Hosted by the National Liberty Museum (NLM), the auction features
works by Dale Chihuly, Javier Gomez, Ann Wolff, and Vladimir Prochazka, to name
a few. Abstraccion Organica IV (2016) by Gomez is constructed
with layers of carved, cerium-polished glass. Gomez is a lifetime artistic
advisor of the MAVA Museum of Glass Art in Alcorcón, Spain. “Each piece has its
own mystery, its own expressiveness, and when observing the viewer’s reaction
to seeing my work, I find that each work has multiple readings and a thousand
ways of looking at it,” Gomez
says of his style.
New names like Jana Voldřichová also stand
out in the auction. She often employs techniques such as painting, casting, and
engraving to render messages through her sculptures, a style she learned under
the tutelage of Professor V. Kopecký. The available cast glass sculpture by
Voldřichová depicts a lady with a dove perched on her head. It is titled Odette (2019).
With the proceeds from the auction, the NLM intends to support its civics
education and outreach programs that teach young people leadership, empathy,
personal responsibility, and respect for diversity. View the 30 selected lots
