In the upcoming Photographs auction, Andreas Gursky’s São Paulo, Sé is one of the highlighted lots. Many of Gursky’s noted works study human behavior in private and public spaces. The offered piece from 2002 was captured at the city’s multi-level metro station. The photograph is split horizontally by six crowded train platforms.
The upcoming Phillips event offers over 200 photographs in the catalog. This includes American photographer Irving Penn’s Fishmonger, London, a platinum palladium print from 1950. Penn was among the influential photographers of the 20th century who took a distinct, minimalistic approach to fashion. He often photographed his subjects against gray or white backgrounds, “allowing the viewers to focus on their pose, expressions, and style.” In the portrait, the fishmonger smiles at the viewer, holding a fish and a rugged piece of cloth on either side. Bidders can also consider Candida Höfer’s chromogenic print of Pierpont Morgan Library in New York. Höfer is a renowned interior photographer with an interest in capturing grand libraries.
