Palm Beach Modern Auctions will offer Red Rug by Milton Avery as a leading lot. It was painted and signed by the artist/designer in 1958. Milton Avery (American, 1885 – 1965) was “our greatest colorist,” wrote American art critic Hilton Kramer in a 1981 article. Avery often traveled to different places with his wife and daughter, looking for new vistas to paint. His human forms, like the one in the offered painting, would often fuse with and mimic their surroundings. This piece was part of the collection of Mrs. Barbara Schlang in Florida. She purchased the painting at Milton and Sally Michel Avery’s New York home later in the artist’s life. Mrs. Schlang recalls that Sally Michel answered the door and advised that Milton was not well and was resting. She entered the bedroom, selected this work, and asked “Do you like this one?” The work has remained in Mrs. Schlang’s collection until now.

He specialized in early American glass, Americana items, and Pennsylvania folk art. These interests are well-represented in the upcoming auction. Hand-painted antiquities, including a folk art decorated poplar box from the 19th century, stand out. This piece measures over ten inches high and 13 inches wide. Painted red and white flowers decorate the box. Smaller painted wood boxes will also come under the hammer, including a black, red, and green Bucher box from 19th-century Berks County, Pennsylvania. The upcoming Modern and Contemporary Art sale from Freeman’s | Hindman will particularly feature items from the collection of Dr. Julian Katz and Dr. Sheila Moriber Katz of Gladwyne, Pennsylvania. Key artists with work in this section of the catalog include Roy Lichtenstein and Hans Hofmann. The latter artist’s Red Faces is particularly striking. This 1945 work by the German-born American painter represents an early gesture toward Abstract Expressionism. Swirls of color are laid over a green and red background. Another key lot in the catalog is a $ screenprint by Andy Warhol. Executed in 1982, this work places nine dollar signs in a grid. During the 1980s, Warhol was interested in the rising obsession with wealth in America and the decade’s shifting economic tides. “By elevating the dollar sign to the status of art object,” the auction house notes in the lot description, “Warhol blurred the lines between cultural and financial value.”

This upcoming three-day auction from Millea Bros. Ltd. features a diverse selection of fine artworks, decorative art, furniture, Asian antiques, and more. Leading the first day of the sale is a color lithograph by Joan Miró, titled Cartones. Miró incorporated recurring themes with abstract elements in his works using color and form as symbols of meaning. In the Pointillism style, the artist used colorful dots to create the available image. Unlike his primary color palette, Miró employed purples and siennas alongside intense greens, yellows, and blues. He contrasted these dots of color with black lines which are closely spaced dots as well. Created in 1965, this color lithograph is pencil-signed by the artist in the lower margin. This piece of artwork is part of the catalogue of the exhibition “Cartones.”
Among the top lots on the second day of this event is a 19th-century Chinese verre eglomise painting. Verre églomisé, also known as reverse-painted glass, has its origins in pre-Roman times. The available reverse glass painting, featuring a woman holding a sheaf of wheat, is vividly colored and detailed. Bidders can also consider a Ushak carpet from the first half of the 20th century. Woven in Western Turkey, Ushak rugs feature distinctive patterns, such as big geometric shapes, large-scale floral designs, and central medallions. Carl Clemens Moritz Rungius was celebrated as a leading wildlife artist of America. His initial visits to Maine and Wyoming helped him closely study and paint animals. The upcoming Doyle auction will feature The Old Man of the Mountains, an oil on canvas painting by Rungius. Making direct observation of the wilderness, he portrayed the animal in its natural environment. Another interesting animal subject oil work is Terriers Ratting in a Stable. The painting is attributed to George Armfield, a British genre painter known for images of domesticated dogs. The upcoming Vintage Posters sale from Potter & Potter Auctions will offer a Destroy this Mad Brute: Enlist poster by Harry R. Hopps (1869 – 1937). This poster from 1917 predates King Kong by more than a decade. In this propaganda poster, Hopps uses powerful imagery to depict a bloodied gorilla representing the German army. The brute gorilla, wearing a pickelhaube helmet labeled “militarism,” steps foot onto an American shore as Europe lies in ruin in the distance. The enraged gorilla grips a half-naked Lady Liberty captive in one arm while his other carries a bloody club marked “Kultur.” The image was intended to rouse its audience to join the cause against the “German militarism” threatening American liberty.
An upward view of the massive ocean liner Normandie with a flock of seagulls is depicted in another available poster by A. M. Cassandre (1901 – 1968). When the SS Normandie first set sail from Saint-Nazaire, France, in 1932, it was the largest and fastest steamship ever created. Completing its first voyage to New York in record time, Normandie became a national symbol of France’s leading position in the shipping industry. The poster of the Transatlantique French Line Normandie was printed in 1935 by Alliance Graphique. This poster for the SS Normandie by Cassandre is considered a masterpiece of Art Deco by many art historians. The glamour and excitement of ocean liner travel were marketed with such images. Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron (also known as A. M. Cassandre) was a modernist poster artist, painter, graphic designer, and stage designer who began his career in Paris in 1923. One of his most recognized works remains the Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) monogram. Visit Potter & Potter Auctions’ website to view the complete catalog and register to bid in this Vintage Posters sale.
