Carl Clemens Moritz Rungius was celebrated as a leading wildlife artist of America. His initial visits to Maine and Wyoming helped him closely study and paint animals. Rungius was so fascinated by the landscapes and wildlife of the region that the German-born artist immigrated to the United States in 1896. The upcoming Vintage Posters sale from Potter & Potter Auctions will offer a Destroy this Mad Brute: Enlist poster by Harry R. Hopps (1869 – 1937). This poster from 1917 predates King Kong by more than a decade. In this propaganda poster, Hopps uses powerful imagery to depict a bloodied gorilla representing the German army. The brute gorilla, wearing a pickelhaube helmet labeled “militarism,” steps foot onto an American shore as Europe lies in ruin in the distance. The enraged gorilla grips a half-naked Lady Liberty captive in one arm while his other carries a bloody club marked “Kultur.” The image was intended to rouse its audience to join the cause against the “German militarism” threatening American liberty.

When the SS Normandie first set sail from Saint-Nazaire, France, in 1932, it was the largest and fastest steamship ever created. Polish painter Stanisław Chlebowski was well known for his Oriental-themed works. After his initial education in the arts, he pursued a six-year scholarship under the aegis of French Orientalist Jean-Léon Gérôme. From 1864 to 1876, Chlebowski resided in Constantinople, where he was commissioned as the master artist during the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz. The upcoming Showplace Antiques sale will feature Standing Bashi-Bazouk, an Oriental oil on canvas painting by Chlebowski. It is signed and dated lower right. A bashi-bazouk in Ottoman roughly means “disorderly” and the one who was raised as an irregular soldier during war. Another notable oil on canvas painting in the catalog, titled Family Portrait, is attributed to François-Joseph Kinson. The neoclassical painting portrays a mother and her three children.
