British luxury jeweler David Morris is known for crafting and producing fine jewelry and watches. Established in 1962 by David Morris, it is a family-owned business. The jewelry house has designed the Miss World crown and notable pieces for the James Bond film franchise and royal families. An exceptional sapphire and diamond necklace from David Morris is a key highlight of the upcoming Sotheby’s sale. It features graduated oval-shaped diamonds interposed with pear- and marquise-shaped diamonds. Artist and inventor of the charcoal and dry pastel sanding technique, Annie Murphy-Robinson was born in 1967. She grew up in Heron, Montana. At an early age, she took art lessons from a local teacher, Mrs. Barbara Mullens. She earned her BFA from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and an MA from Sacramento State University. Louis Justin Laurent Icart (French, 1888 – 1950) dedicated himself to painting, drawing, and etching. Icart, in demand throughout his career, captured the essence of the Art Deco period. Another artist who succeeded during the Art Deco period was Fanny Volmers Icart (French, 1896 – 1970). In 1914, the artists met, and Fanny began modeling for many of Louis Icart’s works. They fell in love, and Fanny became Louis’ muse. Portrait de Fanny by Louis Icart is a notable oil on canvas featuring Fanny Volmers Icart. A Fang-Ntumu reliquary figure dating back to the 19th century and a Kwele mask are among the notable African works in this upcoming Sotheby’s auction. The male ancestor statue stands at 45.7 cm high and reflects the style of the Fang-Ntumu people of Northern Gabon. The subject here is in a semi-seated position with a rounded forehead and rectangle mouth. The head is perched on a long and cylindrical neck, while the ears are semi-circular. From the left ear dangles a pendant of three metal rings holding a glazed blue and white faience. According to the auction house, this piece of the sculpture was previously owned by Charles Ratton, Louis Carré, and Olivier Le Corneur.
Another item highlighted in the sale is an African Kwele mask from the Collection of Leinuo Zhang, Milan. This wooden mask from the Kwele tribe of Gabon measures 24.5 inches tall and is hand-carved.
