Patek Philippe Aquanaut & Platinum Rolex Day-Date Lead NY Elizabeth’s 2336 | Fine Watches Auction

The Patek Philippe Aquanaut created a sensation when it was launched in 1997. It offered something unexpected and modern with its youthful new look. Its case was a rounded octagon inspired by the sea creature Nautilus. The Aquanaut sported a “tropical” composite black strap ultra-resistant to wear, salt water, and UV radiation. The strap was made of a new composite material by Patek Philippe. An 18-karat rose gold Patek Philippe Aquanaut with tropical black rubber strap is leading the upcoming 2336 | Fine Watches Auction, presented by NY Elizabeth. It has a 40mm case size with automatic movement. Watch collectors can also consider a titanium Bulgari Octo Finissimo Perpetual calendar.  Dates and days are essential, according to Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex and Tudor. The Rolex Day-Date is instantly recognizable because of its unique design. Since its launch in 1955, the Day-Date was the only watch with a semi-circular window at 12 o’clock displaying the day of the week in full. It is the only watch with a specially-designed President bracelet available in gold or platinum. The auction offers a selection of women’s watches as well, including an 18-karat white gold Rolex Day-Date. It has a 36mm case with automatic movement. Other notable watch brands represented in the sale are Audemars Piguet, Vacheron, Omega, and Tag Heuer. 1800s Burlwood Jewelry Caddy Leads 2333 | Decorative Arts Sale by NY Elizabeth

An 1800s burlwood jewelry caddy is among the highlights of the upcoming 2333 | Decorative Arts Auction, presented by NY Elizabeth. This handmade set is beautifully decorated and has an aged look. Inside this antique jewelry casket are two French opaline bottles. These rare bottles were most probably designed by Portieux Vallery. The glasses are adorned with little gilt gold stars on a white body. They can be used as perfume or apothecary bottles or simply as decoration. This museum-worthy piece is said to be the only kind in the sale. Another notable French opaline item on offer is a white glass pitcher with a noticeable neon green handle. Both items were acquired from the Palm Springs Estate of Jerry Anderson and Ray Howard in London in the 1970s. From Asia, a notable lot in this auction is a large green glass vase with a Japanese cherry blossom motif. The cherry blossom is enameled in gold, white, and red. Clear glass production in Japan dates back to as early as the Kofun period (around 300 to 538 CE), but it remained incredibly rare, difficult, and costly up until the Edo period (1603 - 1868) when new techniques and expanding consumer culture allowed glass manufacturing to flourish. While many of Japan’s most instantly recognizable traditional crafts center on materials like ceramics and textiles, glass products produced in Japan are famed around the world today. Paintings by John McGhie and Arthur Wardle Lead NY Elizabeth’s British Fine Art Collection Sale

Emperor Huizong, also known as Zhao Ji, was the eighth emperor of the Song Dynasty of China. Although Zhao Ji was considered to be an incompetent ruler, he was an outstanding painter. The Imperial Painting Academy was a significant organization that thrived during his reign. A mixed media painting in the manner of Zhao Ji is a key highlight of the upcoming sale from NY Elizabeth. It is an ornithological depiction of two wild birds perched on branches with plum blossoms. The birds’ eyes are hand-painted with rare plum decorations. Done with ink, gouache, and colors on silk, the lot includes a protective glass cover.  Another interesting item in this sale is a portrait of William Muirhead of Messrs by John McGhie. Depicted in a frontal half-length portrait, Muirhead was a Glasgow-based iron and steel merchant. The early-20th-century artwork portrays the merchant as a gentleman with his mustache, white shirt, tie, and suit-jacket. A noteworthy landscape painting of Exmoor by Arthur Wardle also leads the listings. Fine Art by Fantin-Latour, British Impressionist Painters Available at NY Elizabeth

Henri-Théodore Fantin-Latour made a name for himself in 19th-century England for his flower still lifes. He worked in a soft, Impressionistic style that drew lessons from the Old Master paintings hanging in the Louvre. An oil on canvas painting by Fantin-Latour depicting the Greek transformation myth of Daphne and Apollo will soon come to auction with NY Elizabeth. Using dark shades and tight brushstrokes, Fantin-Latour depicted a brief moment of contact before Daphne transformed into a laurel tree at the river’s edge.  This sale showcases fine examples of British fine art from across the centuries. Styles represented in the catalog range from Impressionism and Classicism to stern portraits and sweeping landscapes. Collectors interested in religious art can consider a 17th-century Dutch painting showing the marriage of the Virgin Mary. Its style closely resembles the workshop of Peter Paul Rubens. Joseph stands in the center of the frame, accompanied by a white-clad Mary, while cherubs toss down flowers from above. Additional lots of note include a 19th-century portrait of Irishman Henry Gordon Evans by Frederick, Lord Leighton, a Russian Impressionist twilight scene by Alexandr Moravov, and a circular portrait of two young girls by English painter Frank Salisbury. Henry-Theodore Fantin-Latour’s Mystical Depiction of Daphne & Apollo Leads British Fine Art Auction

A rare Napoleonic War-era portrait thought to be of Juliette Récamier is coming to NY Elizabeth’s upcoming auction of British Fine Art. It is an 18th-century French Napoleonic portrait of a lady seated in an interior believed to be painted by Ingres, Simon, or Gerard. Juliette Récamier, born Jeanne Françoise Julie Adélaïde Récamier in 1777 Paris, was a beloved French socialite during her time. Numerous paintings and sculptures were modeled after her modest beauty and mannerisms. As a salon leader, she was a host to notable artists and literary and political figures of her society. In popular culture, because she loved reclining, furniture was termed after her as the récamier. Another legend is brought to life in a 17th-century oil painting. It is believed to have been painted by an Italian Old Master from the Bolognese School. It depicts Diana, goddess of wild animals, and her hound perched on her lap. The Bolognese School was the epicenter of Italian painters of great caliber, and many were heavily influenced by Christianity and saints, giving rise to the Baroque style. One of the most notable lots in the auction is a 19th-century Classical Impressionist scene of Daphne and Apollo by Henry-Theodore Fantin-Latour. The two nude mythical figures, bathed in the moonlight, represent sensual, unattainable love in a beautiful nocturnal woodland scene. Find the listed items and more online auctions on Bidsquare.

It is an 18-karat rose gold watch with a 27.50mm case and automatic movement. The story of its origin begins in the middle of the 19th century in Manipur (India), where the Manipur royals and locals played “sagol kangjei,” translating as horse hockey. The players on horseback hit a ball across a rectangular field. British Lieutenant Sherer reported his observations to Captain Robert Stewart, and the two began playing the game that is now known as polo. In 1930, during a visit to India, Swiss native César de Trey encountered polo-playing British officers who sought a robust timekeeper for use during the game. That resulted in the Reverso– a wristwatch that had a case primarily of two parts, one of which was a swiveling capsule that could be pivoted 180 degrees on a hinge.
