Swiss artist Marc Gabriel Charles Gleyre emphasized classical and biblical subjects in his works. Gleyre helped create the juste-milieu compromise style of painting. Additionally, he taught a number of aspiring artists who later became prominent, including Claude Monet. The upcoming Antiques & Decorative Arts Winter Auction offered by Los Angeles Antiques will include an oil painting after the style of Gleyre, titled Les illusions Perdues or Le Soir.
Another item available in the event is a piece styled after Diego Velázquez. The available portrait shows Don Gaspar de Guzmán on top of a horse, his body angled toward a battle. Guzmán’s head, however, turns back to show a glimpse of his face. Guzmán was a powerful figure during the reign of Philip IV, bearing a major impact on Spanish politics and culture. Other featured items include a 19th-century French ormolu clock. With three mounted figures of winged cherubs, the clock contains its original dial and gold gilding.
