New England Auctions’ upcoming sale, featuring works from various estates and collections, will present over 450 lots of fine Americana, folk art, and Native American pieces. Leading the sale is a Cray-pas on paper painting by Eddie Arning, a Texas-born artist. The drawings by Eddie Arning depicting rural life and popular culture play an important role in the oeuvre of American outsider art. In Arning’s work, all surface elements are utilized, and color and composition are fully explored. Using multiple frameworks, Arning presented stylized human forms in flat pictorial environments. Although the artist was severely isolated and had no formal art training, Arning’s art is often portrayed as an example of long-lost modernism with its stark minimalism and stylized figuration.
Other notable lots in the sale include Howard Finster’s carved and painted wooden sculpture titled Giraffe and Cat. In the “outsider art” movement, Howard Finster is considered to be among the foremost and most popular artists. A self-taught artist, Finster blended religious and spiritual imagery into his paintings, applying tractor enamel on various surfaces. His works included Elvis pictures, eschatological visions, and several scripture-infused pieces. Also available is a folk art doll made from fabric by Julia Beecher. This doll is dressed in a matching baby dress and bonnet. Visit Bidsquare to view the Americana, Folk Art & Native American from Estates & Collections sale and browse other online auctions.

Minted in 1800, a Brazil gold PGA MS63+ coin featuring Queen Maria leads the Jan 13th Colorado Conductor Coin Auction from Gold Standard Auctions. This gold 6400 Reis by engraver José Gaspard featuring Maria I, Queen of Portugal (1777 – 1816) is also called the ‘half Johanna.’ These types of coins were minted at the Rio de Janeiro mint. Coin obverse reads “Maria· I· D·G· PORT· ET· ALG· REGINA 1793. R.”, meaning “Maria I, by the Grace of God, Queen of Portugal and Algarve, 1793 R.” The reverse features the crowned Shield of Arms of Portugal. Brazil’s gold 6,400 Reis (or ‘Half Johanna’) was one of the chosen money denominations during the Australian Proclamation of 1800 by Philip Gidley King, the Governor of New South Wales. Each type was given a high face value to retain coinage within the colony.
An 1892-CC Morgan Silver Dollar is another leading lot. It was designed by the seventh Chief Engraver at the US Mint, George T. Morgan (1845 – 1925). He was awarded a scholarship to attend the South Kensington Art School and worked for the British Royal Mint due to his exceptional talent for modeling and sculpting. The year 1876 marked a significant turning point in history, as the United States was experiencing a significant silver rush along with a boom in mining. The US could expand its money supply by issuing more silver dollars as the silver supply increased. The US Mint was led by Director Henry R. Linderman, who decided to begin new patterns for the silver dollar, termed the Morgan dollar, named after George T. Morgan. Christie’s Important Americana sale will feature a portrait of George Washington (Vaughan type) painted in 1795 by Gilbert Stuart (1755 – 1829). This portrait of George Washington is among the earliest painted by Stuart after the President’s first sitting in the fall of 1795. This sitting was the basis for the portraits known today as the “Vaughan” type, as they were commissioned by John Vaughan, a wine merchant, philanthropist, and long-time treasurer and librarian of the American Philosophical Society. The artist has rendered his Impressionistic hallmark brushstrokes for this painting of Washington. Only 14 examples of this type are known today. The portrait is the Philips-Brixey example owned by Nathaniel Philips (1726 – 1808) or his son Samuel Philips (1762 – 1824). Nathaniel Philips and his brother John founded the Manchester firm of J. and N. Philips, one of the largest textile manufacturers in 18th-century England.
Another notable Americana lot is a painting by Ammi Phillips (1788 – 1865). Phillips was born in Connecticut and lived anonymously for almost five decades. The 500 or so works now attributed to him were once thought to have been produced by several different artists based on the disparate styles observed. The characteristics of his portraits developed with the artist over several decades. Mrs. Ruth (Haynes) Palmer (1797 – 1873) is an oil on canvas depiction of the sitter painted in 1818 by Phillips. Ruth Haynes Palmer was the daughter of John Haynes and Phebe Peck. She married William Palmer in 1816, and they had eight children together. The family had substantial wealth from Palmer’s business ventures, most notably the manufacture of woolen and cotton cloths and railroad projects. Phillips painted Mrs. Palmer as arrestingly beautiful and charming. He used white to depict her dress, a color that was bold, impractical, and expensive for the time, to convey the sitter’s stature.
