Tall / Elegant 18th C. Rococo Marble Statue of Goddess

Tall / Elegant 18th C. Rococo Marble Statue of Goddess

Tall / Elegant 18th C. Rococo Marble Statue of Goddess:

Western Europe, France, Rococo, ca. 18th century CE. This expertly carved marble statue depicts an elegant goddess, draped with a chiton with fabric folds cascading over her curvaceous body and the left sleeve falling seductively from her shoulder. She sits upon a fluted column with her left knee bent, her right leg fully extended, and her sandaled feet positioned accordingly. Her arms are positioned as if they were holding an attribute; note how her right hand is clenched in a fist. Indeed, this lovely lady’s pose is anything but static, despite the fact that she is sitting. Although the goddess’ head is lost, long wavy tresses over her neck and shoulder allude to her timeless beauty. This idealistic representation displays the sculptor’s inheritance of the Classical Greek tradition, demonstrating a continued Greek influence over Roman sculptors. Size: 26.5″ H (67.3 cm)

The sculptor’s ability to capture the goddess’ weight shift and rhythmic sense of motion conjures a quality of human vitality in this sculpture. Such calculated poses were inspired by the ancient Greek works of Polykleitos and became the model to which sculptors aspired in Graeco-Roman as well as later Western European art. Although no particular attributes of this figure are visible, the fine level of technique and artistry displayed in this piece suggests that it depicted a goddess – perhaps Venus (Aphrodite in the Greek pantheon), the goddess of romantic love, who magically rose from the sea on a giant scallop shell – or Fortuna (Tyche in the Greek pantheon) whose name literally means “fortune” as she is associated with both bona (good) and mala (bad) fortune, chance, and luck – or Diana (Artemis in the Greek pantheon), the goddess of hunting and the moon. Regardless of her identity, any goddess would have been proud to have such a stunning portrayal dedicated to her. A masterfully realized figure presenting a convincing naturalistic pose implying lifelike movement as well as exceptional modeling of her body and garment. Clearly, the technical skill of this sculptor was paramount. Indeed the artist who created this piece clearly possessed the expertise required to turn stone to fabric and flesh!

Rare Inca Silver Aryballos / Urpu – Jaguar Head

Rare Inca Silver Aryballos / Urpu - Jaguar Head

Rare Inca Silver Aryballos / Urpu – Jaguar Head:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Inca, ca. 1450 to 1550 CE. A stunning 97.56% silver cast aryballos shaped vessel known as an urpu, with a zoomorphic lug and original fibrous stopper. The bell-shaped body rises from a conical base and two strap handles protrude from the lower portion of the sides. The neck supports a flat and wide rim with two downward pointing tabs. From the shoulder of the body rises an animal head, perhaps a jaguar, with incised lines forming bared teeth and eyes. While decorative, the jaguar head also served as a lug for securing a strap. The mouth of this vessel is stuffed with a plug made from fibrous cord set with resin. Likely made of alpaca fur, the cord is a solidified mass that forms a cork-shaped plug with two twisted strands at the top. The most ornate vessels were often used as votive pieces for rituals. These vessels are usually made from pottery, making this beautiful silver example both exciting and rare! Lucite stand for photography purposes. Size: 6.5″ W x 8.25″ H (16.5 cm x 21 cm); quality of silver: 97.56%; total weight: 816.46 grams

Urpus were used for transporting and storing liquids such as chicha, fermented corn beer, and the conical base enabled the vessel to be pushed into sand or soft earth to stand upright. When alpacas were overburdened, human porters carried the urpu vessels on their backs. The lugs below the rim secured a cloth or skin cover over the mouth to prevent spillage. The jaguar lug would also secure a strap that ran through the handles and tied the vessel to the porter’s back. The Spaniards melted down most of the precious metal objects that they found, and few silver pieces of this size remain so nicely intact. This luxurious urpu certainly served as a votive vessel for an elite member of society or as a grave good!

Impressive Roman Marble Female – Pudicitia Type

Impressive Roman Marble Female - Pudicitia Type

Impressive Roman Marble Female – Pudicitia Type:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. Larger than life – an exceptional, finely carved marble woman standing contrapposto with her weight on her right leg. Heavy layers of drapery envelop the ancient figure, as her himation falls in billowing folds above her cascading chiton. She stretches her left arm across her body, helping to support her right, which bends upwards, likely to softly touch the hood of her himation. A pair of fingers and a thumb extend from her left hand and lay on her hip. The bashful pose of this statue is known as the Pudicitia type – a Hellenistic style developed from the 3rd to 2nd centuries BCE and named for the goddess of modesty and chastity, Pudicitia. It is also known as the Braccio Nuovo type, after the draped female statue located in the New Wing of the Vatican Museums under accession number MV.2284.0.0. The grandeur of this statue suggests that it may have been part of a public monument. Size: 19″ L x 14″ W x 48.5″ H (48.3 cm x 35.6 cm x 123.2 cm); 77.25″ H (196.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Marble statuary, reliefs, and cladding were ubiquitous in the Roman world, as the remains of the preserved cities at Herculaneum and Pompeii demonstrate. Their sculpture was intended to conjure human vitality, and was inspired by the works of Polykleitos, who became the model to which sculptors aspired in Greco-Roman art as well as later Western European art. Greco-Roman statuary, unlike that of the other Mediterranean civilizations like Egypt, Persia, etc., celebrated the naturalistic human form. This included representations of their gods who appear as if living people, dressed as if they are elite citizens. For example, the famous statue of Hades with Cerberus, his three-headed dog, today on display at the Archaeological Museum of Crete, has an extremely realistic quality despite its fantastical nature, down to the details on each dog head. This suggests an intriguing, more personal relationship with the gods rather than the more abstract or magical portrayals of other contemporary societies.

A pair of similar marble statues with feet still intact have been sold by Christie’s New York: the first sold for $64,625 as lot 272 in Live Auction 9666 “Antiquities” on June 8th, 2001, and the second hammered $120,000 as lot 158 in Live Auction 1846 “Antiquities” on June 8th, 2007.
