Unique Antiques from Civil War General George Meade Estate and More

Oil on Canvas of Finches by Hunt Slonem (b 1951 -)

Keystone Auctions LLC will offer items ranging from fine art to military books in the upcoming Unique Antiques from Civil War General George Meade Estate and More auction. Among the highlighted lots is a painting of four finches from 1990, created by Hunt Slonem. Best known for his Neo-Expressionist oil paintings of tropical birds, Slonem often depicts multiples of the same subject. He has stated, “I was influenced by Warhol’s repetition of soup cans and Marilyn. But I’m more interested in doing it in the sense of prayer, with repetition… It’s really a form of worship.”

Also highlighted is a mid-century sideboard designed by Milo Baughman. Considered a pioneer of modern design, Baughman collaborated with Thayer Coggin to produce Mid-Century Modern furniture. The available lot comes from that collaboration and features three doors. A vintage Gerard Perregaux Sea Hawk wristwatch will be offered as well. Launched in 1940, the Sea Hawk is a waterproof and shockproof day-to-day watch. Browse these items and register to bid online on Bidsquare.

Three-Day Auction (Session I)

Russian gemstone and enameled seal

In the first session of the upcoming Three-Day Auction, Charlton Hall Auctioneers presents a selection of fine arts, Asian antiques, and jewelry. Featured is an oil on board piece by William Melton Halsey. The 20th-century artist was one of South Carolina’s leading Modernists, recognized for his vibrant paintings, collages, and sculptures. Halsey derived his style from a Post-Cubist tradition of exploring nature and abstraction through color and lines. Eventually, his work included personal expressionism, often characterized by the use of bold textures. Other highlights of this auction include a pair of 1845 porcelain vases from Edmé Samson. The pottery manufacturer is known for mirroring the designs of Chinese Export porcelain until production stopped in 1969. Each vase is accented with scrolling acanthus handles.

The auction offers sculpture and decorative art as well. A Viennese rock crystal cornucopia is among the featured lots. The 19th-century horn is carved with hounds, game, and fowl. The entire cornucopia is supported by a stag on a domed crystal. It reflects the culture and style of Renaissance art. Explore the full listings and register to bid online on Invaluable.

Photographs Monthly Online Auction

Photographs Month-long Online Auction

A world-renowned landscape photographer and environmentalist, Ansel Adams is best known for his black-and-white photographs of the American West. Adams was given a camera at the age of 12 while visiting Yosemite National Park for the first time. The park would go on to play a significant role in his artistic journey. The upcoming Photographs Monthly Online auction, presented by Heritage Auctions, will showcase several Adams photographs of Yosemite National Park. One of them is Moon and Half Dome (1960), taken on a winter afternoon. The piece shows the rising moon above a shadowy cliffside. The gelatin silver photograph was printed later by Alan Ross.

Another key lot is titled Marilyn Monroe in a Deckchair by Frank Worth, an American photographer known for befriending Hollywood stars and capturing them in candid moments. His style was unconventional for the time, as many film celebrities preferred posing for glamor shots. To view the complete catalog and register to bid online, visit Heritage Auctions.

International Ethnographic Arts

International Ethnographic Arts Material Culture

Available in the upcoming International Ethnographic Arts sale is a standing Buddha stone statue from the Northern Qi Dynasty. A 15th-century stone-carved qilin will also feature in this Material Culture sale. Seen mostly near entryways and in other noticeable areas, each mythological qilin is said to live for 2,000 years.

In many African cultures, the figure of Mami Wata is known as a half-aquatic and half-human deity. She represents the conflicting nature of water. Both an important means of providing communication, food, drink, and trade, water can also drown people, flood fields or villages, and provide passage to intruders. A Mami Wata figure reflecting those opposing concepts is offered in this auction.

Often passed from mother to daughter or given as part of a dowry, coral has long been considered a prized material in the Himalayan region. In Tibetan culture, red coral is considered an effective amulet for giving protection and warding off misfortune. A Tibetan brass, turquoise, and coral bead necklace is available in this auction. Also offered are two Balinese songket textiles. These hand-woven cloths are made of silk and metal-wrapped threads. To view the mentioned lots and others, visit Invaluable.

Fine & Decorative Arts Month-long Online Auction

Ferdinand Minor (German, 1814-1883)

In Roman mythology, followers of the god Bacchus were called bacchants and were often depicted as intoxicated or frenzied. Highlighted in the Fine and Decorative Arts Monthly Online Auction, presented by Heritage Auctions, is a marble sculpture of a bacchant. This 1990 French piece shows the bacchant sitting naked on a stone, surrounded by flowers.

Also featured in this event is Salvador Dalí’s Christo de San Juan de la Cruz sculpture. During World War II, Dalí returned to his Catholic faith and a more traditional form of art, far removed from his previous Surrealist work. This figure, produced in 1974, reimagines Saint John of the Cross’ vision of Jesus’ crucifixion. Dalí regularly revisited this moment in Christian history, including in his 1951 painting of the same name.

Among the event’s highlighted lots is Peter Max’s Peace on Earth II. In the original Peace on Earth painting, produced in 2001, the Statue of Liberty stands before a globe with an American flag draped behind her. It was the artist’s initial response to the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. Unlike the original, Peace on Earth II displays the rainbow-hued colors distinctive to Max’s work. However, the central image of the Statue of Liberty remains the same as the 2001 version. Those interested in this or any other piece can register to bid on the Heritage Auctions website.

Error Coinage US Coins Month-Long Online Auction #60156

Coinage US Coins Month-Long Online Auction #60156

The upcoming Error Coinage US Coins Month-Long Online Auction will present a 1973-S 50-cent Kennedy half-dollar. This mint error on a proof shows three visible strikes on each side with the date and mintmark indicated on the final strike. Also featured in this event, offered by Heritage Auctions, is a 1943 one-cent coin struck on a silver dime planchet. Because pennies were struck on zinc-coated steel planchets at the time, they resembled dimes in both size and color. This coin is centered and well-detailed. The left rims are absent due to the smaller diameter of the dime planchet.

A 1977-S five-cent nickel struck on a copper cent planchet and a triple-struck 1973-D Roosevelt dime can also be found. Rounding out the highlighted lots is a five-cent Jefferson nickel that was reverse indented by a ten-cent planchet. The Jesse Lopez Dollar Collection US Coins Month-Long Online Auction

1795 Draped Bust Dollar, XF40 B-14, BB-51, Off Center

Heritage Auctions will highlight a 1795 one-dollar draped bust coin in the upcoming online auction. This coin is slightly off-center with minimal wear. The detail is sharp despite remnants of adjustment marks on the Liberty portrait and along the borders; the definition of the stars and dentils is unaffected.

Featuring the U.S. dollar collection of Jesse Lopez, this sale will also include an 1868 one-dollar coin. This coin shows original blue-green and lilac border toning around a brighter center, which is the typical coloration found on coins from this period. An 1802 narrow date dollar can also be found along with an 1878 one-dollar coin with doubled legs. The latter piece is made of 90% silver and 10% copper. Visit Heritage Auctions to view the entire collection and to place a bid.

A Unique Collaboration: Johan Rohde & Georg Jensen

Very Rare Vintage Georg Jensen Kings Bowl 250B by Johan Rohde

Johan Rohde began a long and significant collaboration with the Georg Jensen Silversmithy after commissioning several of his own designs. Impressed with the results, Jensen secured a long-term contract with Rohde seven years later. A selection of the resulting collaborative works will be offered in the upcoming Johan Rohde and Georg Jensen auction, offered by Greg Pepin Silver. Many of the available lots were made in Rohde’s Art Deco style, which he helped advance within the silver market. Works from the Acorn/ Konge pattern from 1915 and the Scroll/ Saga pattern from 1927 are especially highlighted in this sale. A large sterling silver centerpiece bowl in the latter pattern is among the featured lots. Designed in 1917 and executed between 1945 and 1977, it has a hammered pedestal base with a floral center.

Another key vintage item in this auction is a pre-war sterling silver tea and coffee service with a matching tray. The lot includes a coffee pot, teapot, cream jug, and sugar bowl, all with ebony handles. This set was designed by Rohde around 1928 and bears individually-stamped hallmarks. A set of Acanthus silverware will be presented as well. The sister pattern to the Acorn, the Acanthus emphasized small scrolled details on each piece.
