Americana

Skinner will feature several lots of Staffordshire transferware by Enoch Wood & Sons in the upcoming Americana Online auction. To rekindle England’s trade relationship with the United States following the War of 1812, Enoch Wood started producing a new type of transferware. He called the new style “Staffordshire historical transferware” and decorated the pieces with American buildings, political figures, war battles, and city scenes. Also highlighted is a pair of portraits, executed in 1847 by Joseph Goodhue Chandler. First trained as a cabinetmaker, Candler traveled to Albany to study painting. He often collaborated with his wife Lucretia Ann Waite, who added finishing touches to his portraits.

A key furniture lot in this auction is a set of five Chippendale side chairs. Combining the decorative elements of French Rococo, Chinese ornamentation, and Gothic architecture, these chairs are made of intricately carved mahogany. Among the available cast iron items, a set of painted croquet wickets and a Coca-Cola bottle sculpture will be featured. Browse the full catalog for this auction and register to bid on Bidsquare.

Christie’s will offer the online Wine and Spirits auction through early April, presenting over 800 lots of both California and international wines. Several bottles of 1990 Petrus Pomerol are among the highlighted lots. Produced in the eastern area of the Bordeaux region, Pomerol is named not after a village but after a grassy hill in the area.  Ansel Adams’ experiments with large photographic prints, though revolutionary during his time, would go on to influence contemporary photographers for decades to come. In 1944, Adams photographed an encampment of over 10,000 Japanese Americans who had been forced from their homes by the War Relocation Authority. His large mural titled Winter Sunrise, Sierra Nevada from Lone Pine California was taken while photographing these internment camps in Manzanar, California. This mural will be highlighted in the upcoming Photographs auction, offered by Phillips. Works from John Baldessari, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Charles Sheeler are offered as well.

Sheeler’s photograph of the Ford Motor Company plant in Detroit is particularly highlighted. Sheeler was hired to photograph the factory, the largest industrial complex in the world at that time. The available silver print, produced in 1927, depicts the bleeder stacks that released excess pressure from the tanks below.

Also featured is Andy Warhol’s Self Portrait with Basquiat. One of the leading figures of the Pop Art movement, Warhol is best known for his series of silkscreened prints with celebrities. The polaroid portrait, which was produced in 1982, shows Jean-Michel Basquiat and Warhol smiling after completing a series of portraits of the younger artist. Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper is one of the most recognized paintings in history. It is a Renaissance piece that has been admired and copied for over 500 years. Inspired by the original mural, a set of porcelain figurines arranged in the Last Supper motif will be featured in the upcoming Fine & Decorative Art auction. Presented by Broward Auction Gallery, this sale of 430 lots will include Asian art, antiques, decorative art, toys, and furniture.

One of Margaret Dovaston’s oil paintings is also highlighted in this sale. While Dovaston’s works were mostly imaginative, her art often captured the historical culture and atmosphere surrounding her subjects. The available work depicts a fireplace scene with three men gathered around the hearth. To the side, a young man plays the piano for an admiring woman. Also offered is an oil painting from Anton Otto Fischer depicting a sailing ship. After moving to the United States from Germany in 1897, Fischer began focusing his attention on nautical scenes. New York City Estate Auction

Donald Baechler Candle Mixed Media on Paper

Jeweler Norman Le Beau initially wanted to pursue a career in painting. Instead, he chose to pursue jewelry due to his financial condition. In 1954, he established Le Beau Jewelers in New York and the Boris Le Beau boutique in Palm Beach. The upcoming New York City Estate Auction, offered by Showplace Antique + Design Center, presents a set of Boris Le Beau yellow gold and platinum graphic earrings. Also showcased are jewelry pieces from Marco Bicergo and Milor.

Artworks from Pop artist Donald Baechler also highlighted in the auction. Baechler’s paintings, based on his childhood nostalgia, often included images of maps, balls, and roses. Baeschler’s Untitled (Flowers), available in this auction, depicts stylized flowers in silhouette. An available Hermès scarf designed by Phillippe Ledoux shows a series of equestrian sketches. Great Deals Antiquities Ethnographic Fine Art

Published Greek Glass Pendant - Ram's Head

Sets of gilded brooches were worn throughout the Viking world on women’s cloaks, pinned with a chain between them. An example of these matching brooches from Gotland, Sweden will be offered in the upcoming Great Deals Antiquities Ethnographic Fine Art sale, presented by Artemis Gallery. The available set is made of 75% silver and includes serpent details on the gilded panels. The auction house notes that these would be considered luxury items indicative of wealth and status in Viking society. Another lot of interest in this auction is a 19th-century Victorian suit of armor with a matching helmet. Made of steel, this piece was made for display at home rather than battle.

Offering over 350 lots of ancient and ethnographic pieces, this event includes items from civilizations around the world. A Roman mosaic from the late Imperial Period is presented alongside bronze handles from the Near East. These leopard-shaped handles, likely made between 150 BCE and 225 CE, were cast using the lost wax or cire-perdue technique. The artisan would have poured molten metal into a wax model to create these handles, draining away the wax once the metal cooled. This matching set is detailed with incised spots on each leopard’s coat. Also available in this auction are several works of fine art, including an oil painting by William Draper. Titled White Cymbidium, this 1970s piece depicts white orchids native to subtropical Asia and Australia. Browse the full catalog for this sale and register to bid online on LiveAuctioneers

Palm Beach Collections Session I

A Pair of Large French Gilt and Patinated Bronze Fourteen-Light Candelabra Height overall 45 inches.

A leading lot of the upcoming Palm Beach Collections auction, presented by Hindman, is a sculpture carved by Arno Breker. Originally from Germany, Breker abandoned his studies in 1924 and moved to Paris. While there, he began to meet with artists such as Pablo Picasso. Breker would later play a significant role in the development of art and architecture in Nazi Germany. His sculptures were popular during and beyond the Third Reich. The available sculpture depicts the ideal Aryan man.

Offering items ranging from antiques to furniture, this auction includes 300 lots. Among the leading items is a 22-piece set of Meissen porcelain. Dating back to the 19th century, these figures depict a fully-clothed band of monkeys singing and playing instruments. An oil painting by Hyperrealist painter Yrjö Edelmann will also be presented. Influenced by French Surrealism and its dreamlike motifs, Edelmann helped develop the style of Hyperrealism. Frequently depicting packages, wrapping paper, and pieces of string, his paintings play with shape and shade. Visit  Bidsquare to browse the full catalog and register to bid.

The David Hall T206 Collection Part IV Sports Collectibles Catalog Auction #50027

1909-11 T206 Sweet Caporal 350-30 Christy Mathewson

The fourth part of the David Hall T206 Sports Collectibles Catalog event, offered by Heritage Auctions, will offer more than 200 early baseball cards. The T206 is a designation for tobacco cards issued from 1909 to 1911. These cards were offered on cigarette cartons and loose tobacco packs through the sixteen brands of the American Tobacco Company. Featured in the sale is a Broad Leaf Mordecai Brown card that the auction house says is among the rarest of the T206 cards. The piece is considered “mid-grade with no major condition faults.” Mordecai Brown was a Hall of Fame inductee for the Chicago Cubs who pitched with only three fingers (his hand was injured in a childhood farming accident). The three fingers gave his pitches an unusual approach to the plate, which may account for part of his success.

Also featured is a Rube Marquard card, which is one of two confirmed examples of its kind. Marquard was a Hall of Fame pitcher who led the Giants and later the Dodgers to five National League pennants. This card stands out due to the Uzit Cigarettes ad on its reverse, which the auction house states is “almost never encountered.” Other players with early cards in the sale include Ty Cobb, Joe Tinker, Walter Johnson, Johnny Evers, Christy Mathewson, and others.
