Doyle will present its 20th Century Abstraction / Latin American Art auction this March. The sale features a 1948 painting by Mexican artist Diego Rivera. According to the auction house, American composer Irving Berlin commissioned Rivera to render the cover art for the sheet music to his song In Acapulco. This painting was never published and has remained with the Berlin family since then. Born in 1886 in Guanajuato, Mexico, Rivera was considered one of the significant figures in 20th-century art. Early in his career, he experimented with Cubism and gradually shifted to Post-Impressionism.
Another highlight of the sale is an oil on Masonite work titled Untitled (Day of the Dead) by José Clemente Orozco (1883 – 1949). Orozco was a Mexican artist best known for his political murals and Renaissance-style compositions. He typically used dark, ominous palettes like the one presented in this sale. A Damien Hirst artwork titled Beautiful Dance with the Devil Painting leads the upcoming New Now sale from Phillips. An English artist and art collector, Hirst rose to fame in the 1990s for his art installations displaying dead animals in formaldehyde. The artist has also boldly experimented with sculpture, prints, spin paintings, spot paintings, and works on paper during his career. A 42.75-carat Montana sapphire and platinum necklace is leading the Frontier Splendor: Western Wonders & Native American Art Auction, hosted by North American Auction Company. The Montana sapphire necklace is deemed exceedingly rare, with no indications of heat treatment. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and GeAssure Gemological Appraisals (GGA) both note that the gemstones’ geographic origin is from Montana. The sapphires of the necklace show colors of yellowish-green, green, blue, brown, purple, violet, green, and red. The necklace is set in high polish platinum and also includes 30 round-cut brilliant natural diamonds weighing 8.25 carats, with SI1 to I1 clarity and G to H color. The total weight of the necklace is 52.74 grams.
This Western Wonders sale will also showcase a 13.75-inch long Native American Dag knife. It is a rare piece from the Crow Indians of Colorado dating to the 19th century. The Crow was not a tribe known to have used or possessed “dag” style knives regularly. This scarce piece was likely stolen or traded from another tribe by a Crow warrior during a battle. This is a presentation-grade knife, sometimes called a Chief’s Grade knife. This is paired with an Indian brain-tanned buffalo hide and trade cloth sheath with artful Crow beadwork on the front and long hide fringes off the bottom, a later addition. Other notable lots include an authentic Serapi Persian fine wool rug from the 1880s. The rug has the scarcely seen, rare light blue main border. The large gabled stepped medallion has a rare sky blue and rose color with red field, ivory medallion, and corners. The rug is all wool with natural dyes being hand-woven. Origins of the emerald-cut diamond go back to the table-cut style of the 1500s, when stonecutters used the cutting process for emerald gemstones. The cutters adopted this shape for diamonds, and that’s when the term ‘emerald-cut’ came into being. In the 1920s, emerald-cut diamonds became popular with the onset of the Art Deco movement. The upcoming sale, offered by Bid Global International Auctioneers LLC, features a square emerald-cut GIA-graded diamond. It measures 7.61 carats and features clean lines and symmetry. With its vintage look, the emerald style is valued for its durability and robustness. Another noteworthy emerald-cut piece in the catalog is a diamond measuring 7.03 carats.

A selection of European and British fine art, ranging from the Renaissance period to the 20th century, will soon be available with Brunk Auctions. The company’s upcoming sale particularly features a group of six mythological scenes by Italian Baroque painter Luca Giordano. Active in the late 17th century, Giordano was known as Luca Fa Presto (“Luca, Work Quickly”), a reference to his fast working pace and enormous output. He primarily painted religious and mythological scenes. In the available group of Giordano paintings, the artist depicted various characters from Greek and Roman mythology such as Mars, Venus, Pan, Syrinx, Hercules, and others. The paintings are executed in miniature and on copper, a material the artist favored while working in Spain. These works were purchased in 2007 from Robert Simon Fine Art, a New York gallery. Accompanying documents from the gallery note that “here the artist has rethought themes he treated in larger formats and adapted them to an intimate scale… this set is unique in its diminutive size, evidently the smallest fully realized project of the artist.”
Another key lot in the sale is a Madonna and Child painting attributed to Late Gothic painter Jacobello del Fiore. This work shows the young Christ holding a pomegranate. Mary is clothed in a richly detailed brocade, and both figures are crowned with gold halos. The large lifetime collection of open salts, or salt cellars, built by Judy Noble-Lacasa will soon hit the market with Nest Egg Auctions. Starting at just 11 years old, Judy Noble-Lacasa assembled her collection over the course of 75 years. Nearly 400 lots from her collection will be available in the upcoming sale, including examples from Tiffany, Steuben, Daum, and other notable brands. Among the top lots is a silver commemorative open salt celebrating The Salters’ Company’s 500th anniversary. This elaborately decorated piece is hallmarked for London 1893 and remains in good condition. It features a coat of arms, crowned animals, and a matching spoon. Another top lot is a Lacy Period open salt shaped like a sleigh. Lasting from approximately 1830 to 1850, the Lacy Period of glassmaking featured the rise of more accurate glass molds, allowing increasingly elaborate designs. These molds sometimes left an unpleasant surface texture, which glassmakers covered in lace-like patterns. The offered Lacy Period open salt is colorless and features a scrolled rim.
A Daum Nancy enameled open salt bearing a vibrant violets pattern is another key lot in the upcoming sale. This late-19th or early-20th-century example includes a mottled opal ground with amber sides and base. The violet motif is slightly raised, adding texture and visual interest. American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat was well-known for graffiti-like paintings rendered with his gestural approach. He gained immense popularity during the Neo-Expressionism movement in the 1980s. Cuban baseball legend Regino “Marmelo” García played from 1901 to 1914 with several ballclubs, including San Francisco, Almendares, Cuban X-Giants, and more. He was elected to the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1941. An original bat awarded to García in 1907 with an engraved presentation leads the Ephemera, Americana & Historical Memorabilia sale, presented by Potter & Potter Auctions. García was a catcher for 12 seasons in the Cuban Winter Leagues and holds the record in Cuba for winning the batting crown for four consecutive years (1904 – 1907). In celebration of his prowess, he was given this ‘silver’ trophy baseball bat, made of white metal and plated in silver. The inscription reads “Al Champion / BAT / de 1907 / Regino García.” Also available in the sale is a rare photo showing several legendary players of the Cuban league, including Regino Marmelo García, Alfredo Cabrera, Armando Marsans, and director Juan Sanchez. It is an albumen print showing 21 players and coaches of the Cuban Almendares Baseball Club (1908 – 1909).
A complete set of all 50 1911 (T-201) Mecca cigarettes baseball cards are also available in the auction. Mecca, one of the earliest successful Turkish cigarettes, was introduced by Kinney Bros. in 1878. To attract buyers, the cigarette brand was named Mecca to evoke exotic destinations. Many Mecca ads featured elegant turbaned men. The ads used vibrant, luxurious colors and imagery and soon started issuing covers with famous sports players, like the ones available in the sale.
