Landmark 1879 Four-Dollar Flowing Hair Stella Coin Shines in Single Owner Coin Auction

1879 $4 Stella PR-63 PCGS

A landmark 1879 four-dollar flowing hair coin with an old green holder is leading the upcoming Single Owner Coin Auction, presented by Leonard Auction. It is a Stella PR-63 PCGS coin minted in the US in 1879 and acquired from an estate in Madison, Wisconsin. Stella coins were produced in 1879 and 1880 at the suggestion of Hon. John A. Kasson, U.S. minister to Austria. Kasson felt that a coin of this value would be used by foreign travelers, as it could be readily exchanged for gold coins of approximately equivalent value in France, Germany, and other European countries. The obverse of the four-dollar piece depicting Lady Liberty with long, flowing hair was designed by Chief Mint Engraver Charles Barber. On the reverse, a large, five-pointed star is framed stating the coin’s worth. Its metallic content in the metric system is 6G, .3S, .7C, and 7 GRAMS, indicating its international nature.

A set of 15 US Indian Head two-dollar half gold coins is another notable lot in the sale. The set contains a 90% pure gold Indian Head “Quarter Eagle” from every year of issue (1908 – 1915 and 1925 – 1929). The coin was designed by the renowned sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt. A set of US Gold types that includes 12 different sizes and designs is another notable lot. It includes coins from 1853 $1 Type 1 to 1926 $2.50. Bonhams Offers Significant Prints by Richard Diebenkorn and Robert Indiana

Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993) Title: Green

American painter and printmaker Richard Diebenkorn was associated with the Bay Area Figurative Movement and Abstract Expressionism. In the 1960s, he started working on a noteworthy series called the Ocean Park paintings. These lyrical abstract and geometric compositions earned him international recognition. The upcoming Bonhams auction will feature Green, the largest and the most significant work of the series. This monumental etching with aquatint and drypoint in colors on Somerset paper is initialed in pencil. The green field, rectangular blue, and sandy ochre forms bring to mind coastal Southern California and its ambiance. The work is regarded as Diebenkorn’s most challenging project, as it required seven plates, three different greens, and five printers to accomplish. It is the pinnacle of the artist’s 20-year collaboration with Crown Point Press.

Another key highlight of the upcoming sale is Robert Indiana’s Book of Love, a portfolio of 12 screenprints in colors on A.N.W. Creswood Museum Edition paper. An icon of youthful idealism, Indiana’s ‘LOVE’ is an instantly recognizable typographic image with the word stacked in two lines within a square in capitalized letters. It has a forward leaning “O” in the top right quadrant. Visit Bonhams to view the complete catalog and register to bid in the upcoming Prints & Multiples sale.

Portraits of Truth, Douglass, Phillips, Garrison Alongside “The Green Book” Travel Guide Lead Upcoming African Americana Auction

Records of Hyde Park plantation in Virginia, with lists of their enslaved, and letters by enslaved Confederate workers

“I don’t get enough to eat. Please send me something to eat,” was written by an enslaved man leased to the Confederacy. During this period, Hyde Park was owned by the Fowlkes family. Some of the people enslaved by the Fowlkes family were requisitioned by the Confederate government during the American Civil War. They sent home these letters (likely by dictation), which were then kept as family papers titled “Ages of Slaves” by the Hyde Park plantation owners of Virginia. The upcoming Printed & Manuscript African Americana sale from Swann Auction Galleries presents these records in a single lot, which contains five volumes plus 46 other items in one box dated 1794 to 1936. The strongest impression from these letters is that the enslaved people were being starved. Also included are several loose papers documenting the family’s slavery transactions.

Another notable lot in this sale is The Negro Travelers’ Green Book. The cover of this edition states “Carry your Green Book with you . . . You may need it!” It was presumably offered for sale at gas stations or bookstores. The copy offered in the sale was printed as a special promotional giveaway by the Esso Standard Oil Company, which was known for its educational work in the community, an integrated classroom at the Esso Training Center, and a Black-owned Esso filling station in Buffalo, NY. This book was considered an indispensable travel guide for Black families. It was published at a time when long-distance travel could be dangerous for them due to Jim Crow laws and racial hostility. Friendly service stations, hotels, nightclubs, and restaurants are arranged by state across the country in the book. The last Green Book was printed in 1966. Visit Swann Auction Galleries to find the listed items and register to place a bid in the Printed & Manuscript African Americana sale.
