In Hindman’s upcoming sale highlighting the library of Gerald and Barbara Weiner, a first edition copy of Charles Darwin’s The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection stands out. In this first edition, the word “species” is misspelled on page 20 and the full whale-bear story is included on page 184. The offered copy is also autographed and inscribed by Darwin to an unknown recipient: “Sept 5th, 1880 / Down Beckenham / Kent / With Mr. Darwin’s compliments.”
Also in the auction is a letter written by Malcolm X to author Alex Haley in 1964. In the letter, Malcolm X responds to an editorial published in the Saturday Evening Post titled “The Lesson of Malcolm X.” Though their relationship was originally contentious, Haley eventually authored The Autobiography of Malcolm X with the subject’s cooperation in 1965. With very little formal training, Palmer Hayden pursued painting because he enjoyed it. He flourished during the Harlem Renaissance and developed a more abstract style to represent Black Americans in paintings like Midnight Harlem and Jeunesse. His works are now considered thoughtful reflections of Black American folklore stories, including those of John Henry. A watercolor painting by Hayden showing a New York street scene will be featured in the upcoming Fine Art, Antiques, Jewelry Auction, presented by Helmuth Stone Gallery in early October.

Born in 1757, Aaron Willard was considered one of the most significant horologists of his time. His clocks were the first to be economically accessible throughout the United States. Offered in Americana Auctions’ upcoming sale is a Willard mahogany tall clock. This early American piece features the original floral painted metal dial as well as the original winding key. The interior paper label is also authentic. The clock stands 98 inches tall and is 19.5 inches wide. Another key lot in this Excellent Fall Estates Auction is a mixed media drawing by Adolf Hitler. The Vendo 39 Coca Cola machine first crossed the production line in 1949. Over 80,000 of these vending machines were made, tempting those in gas stations, parks, and grocery stores across the United States to buy a Coke. Featured in the upcoming Eclectic Collection sale, presented by Akiba Antiques, is an example of the Vendo 39. Decorations on the machine include the “Have a Coke” message on the side, as well as a busboy offering the viewer a thumbs up.
Collectors of fine art will find a bronze piece by Dutch sculptor Hanneke Beaumont. As an artist, Beaumont is interested in the idea of contradiction. In this sculpture, she’s created a man who is seated but is not altogether inactive. He fumbles with his hands and stares into the distance, as if working out something of great importance. Helmut Newton was a prolific artist famous for his black-and-white nude photographs. Newton developed an interest in photography at an early age and learned the craft from the prominent German photographer Yva. He later went on to open his photo studio in Melbourne and focused on postwar fashion photography. Newton’s popularity fetched him commissions for publications such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. Explaining the idea behind his provocative photographs, Newton stated, “The people in my pictures have been ‘arranged’ as on a stage. Nonetheless, my pictures are not counterfeit; they reflect what I see in life with my own eyes.” The upcoming 22nd OstLicht Photo Auction features a 1981 photograph collection titled Naked and Dressed, Fashion Models Sitting, Paris by Newton. It shows four models looking in every direction except at the viewer.
Another highlight is Calle Cuauhtemoctzin, Mexico City by the humanist photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. The gelatin silver print was captured in 1934 when Cartier-Bresson was traveling around Italy, Mexico, and Spain. During his trip, the photographer came up with a new photography technique. It involved capturing human spontaneity and flux using a hand-held Leica camera. Calle Cuauhtemoctzin shows two women leaning out from small, wood-paneled openings. The balanced light image features classic textures, a strong sense of space, and the artist’s skill in capturing intimate moments. The upcoming Paintings, Drawings, Prints & Multiples, Photography event, presented by Bertolami Fine Art, highlights a photolithograph for Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s 1974 installation titled The Wrapped Roman Wall. The 2,000-year-old Aurelian Wall was built by Emperor Marcus Aurelius to surround the city of Rome. For 40 days in February and March of 1974, the artist duo wrapped the wall in polypropylene and rope, covering both sides, the top, and the wall’s arches. The duo wrapped monumental buildings and spaces from the 1960s until their deaths. In Christo’s words, their signature works were “absolutely irrational, with no justification to exist.”
Also highlighted among the 760 lots is a world map from John Speed. Considered one of the most famous English cartographers, Speed is internationally recognized for his atlases. The available map, created around 1651, is one of the earliest world maps printed in English and depicts California as an island. The auction also features Bram Bogart’s Abstract Composition.
