Jan Willem Pienemann created a portrait of Charles Cornwallis Dancey, a British colonel, showing Cornwallis in intricate detail. The subject was an educated aristocrat who served King George III and Britain as one of the leading generals of the Revolutionary War. He also served in the Royal Artillery during the Peninsular War in Spain and at the Battle of Waterloo.
