Rebirth of the Cool: Collectible Pop, Contemporary and Street Art: No Buyer’s Premium
Al Diaz was part of the first generation of New York City subway graffiti artists. Even though Diaz's style has evolved, he still uses iconography from the NYC subway system to make his point. In the upcoming Rebirth of the Cool: Collectible Pop, Contemporary, and Street Art auction, offered by Bedford, a 2018 piece by Diaz is the lot with the highest estimated value. It is a wooden toothbrush on which Diaz uses the letters from the NYC subway system to ask people to "Inspire an entire generation 2 create a better planet." The 81 lots of this auction each represent the vision of a contemporary street artist, pop artist, or others involved in outsider movements. In a recent gallery visit, Al Diaz explained that the early days of graffiti were about exposure and power. "It was kind of a big pissing contest,” said Diaz. “My name is gonna be around more than your name." Thousands of miles away, in Penang, Malaysia, Ernest “ZACH” Zacharevic also uses spray paint in public areas to bring exposure, this time to everyday life in Malaysia. His piece in this auction, "No Fly Zone", is a print depicting a Malaysian boy wearing an old fighter pilot helmet and aiming a paper airplane at someone off-scene. Jagged black spray paint completes the outline of the boy. The original canvas of this piece was auctioned by Sotheby's in late 2017. Also among the most notable lots in this auction are several iterations of Andy Warhol's Marilyn Diptych. The original, which is in the permanent collection of the Tate, is considered one of the most important pieces in the Pop Art movement. One of these iterations available in this auction is an invitation to attend the 1981 Andy Warhol Retrospective at Leo Castelli Gallery in New York. The invitation contains a miniature version of Andy Warhol's Marilyn Monroe. Those interested in any of these lots can register to bid on Bidsquare.

20th Century, Modern & Contemporary Fine Art
Artist Richard Estes was given a Kodak camera when he was eight years old. His early exposure to cameras inspired him to produce photo-realistic paintings throughout his career. Included in the upcoming 20th Century Modern & Contemporary Fine Art auction, presented by Stair Galleries, is a painting by Estes during his 2007 visit to Antarctica. Although Estes' work usually depicts city environments, his Antarctica painting still reflects his commitment to Realism. As the event’s name suggests, each of the auction's lots represent the major art movements of the 20th century. This includes a 1985 poster promoting an Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibition. On the poster, Warhol and Basquiat pose as if they were rival boxers. Also available in this auction are several sculptures. Among the highlighted pieces is Elisabeth Frink's Chinese Horse III. The figure's color comes from patina, which is a thin layer of oxidized bronze. Alexander Calder's Cheval II will be offered as well. Browse the full catalog and register to bid online on Bidsquare

Contemporary Art Online
Andy Warhol created many artworks when considering consumerism and celebrity culture. Shoes, in particular, played an important role in Warhol’s career as a commercial artist. Many women’s footwear advertisements in the 1950s were later satirized by Warhol. An example of his work is available in the Contemporary Art Online Auction, presented by Sotheby’s. The available piece, Shoe with Diamond Dust, shows the sole of a shoe and an accompanying bow. This particular lot was made with silkscreen ink and real diamond dust. The upcoming event offers 17 lots of fine art created by artists such as Lee Ufan, David Hockney and Gene Davis. In the late 1960s, Lee Ufan became one of the most famous artists of the Japanese Mono-ha movement. An oil and mineral pigment painting by Lee Ufan is being featured in this auction. His style emphasizes the use of raw, mineral, and industrial elements, defying the traditional notion of expressive representation. The sale is led by a figural painting from Wayne Thiebaud, an American painter. Throughout his career, Thiebaud continually explored still life paintings of everyday objects and edible treats. In this auction, his oil painting of two rows of pie slices is featured. The sale will also highlight an artist whose work is associated with the development of Chinese Political Pop Art - Guangyi Wang. His canvases address the conflict between China’s political past and Western consumerism and advertisements. One of Wang’s works from his ‘Great Criticism’ series can be found in this collection. The traditional Chinese figures painted in this piece resemble famous symbols of Western commercialism. An abstract painting by Franz Kline will also be on offer. Abstracted: Post-War & Contemporary Art
When Tadeusz Kantor, the noted playwright, began painting, the public mostly disregarded his efforts. "[N]o one knew whether he was to be seen as an important theatrical figure or as a visual artist," writes the art magazine Frieze. But nearly thirty years after his death, the upcoming Abstracted: Post-War & Contemporary Art auction, presented by Capsule, especially features two lots by Kantor. His paintings in this auction, IV and XI, both include disorienting black lines. Shapes emerge that appear familiar but are not easily identifiable. These pieces come to auction from the estate of Frank Loesser and Jo Loesser, the Tony-nominated actress who passed away earlier this year. Like Kantor's paintings, many of the auction's lots are experimental. A notable example is Egg born by night by the Russian-American artist Ernst Neizvestny. From a broken eggshell hatches fragments that look both human and mechanical. This oil painting was produced in 1984, years after Neizvestny was exiled from the USSR. Despite his exile, many still considered his work to be emblematic of life in Russia. This included American playwright Arthur Miller, who referred to Neizvestny as the "philosophical conscience of his country." Also represented in this auction is American painter Michael Loew. Both an untitled piece and one painting from Loew's Open Spaces series come to auction from his estate. They both represent Loew's interest in experimenting with color and fragmentation.
