Napoleon III-Style Aubusson Carpets, Chinese Peking Rugs Available at Doyle

Napoleon III Aubusson Carpet

Doyle will present 20 carefully selected carpets in the upcoming Rugs & Carpets auction. Leading the sale is a Napoleon III-style Aubusson carpet from late-19th-century France. Napoleon III was the last Emperor of France from 1852 to 1870 and the first President of France from 1848 to 1852. Napoleon Aubusson carpets made during this period were modified Eastern designs. In the available rug, the central floral medallion on the terracotta field is within ivory scrolling and an elaborate acanthus leaf border. It has small restorations.

From European carpets inspired by Eastern designs to Chinese Peking carpets, the auction showcases a diverse range of rugs from different eras and carpet weavers. A Chinese Peking carpet from the early 20th century is noteworthy. The scattered pattern of phoenix birds covers its rich indigo field. The border is midnight blue with floral vinery decorations all around. Peking Chinese rugs were woven centuries ago by tribes in western China. In the 19th century, these beautiful tribal carpets began their journey to the West. They were hand-knotted using silk, mainly sheep’s wool, and even goats’ hair. The color palette is unique and sometimes limited to as few as two hues, blue and ivory. Many similarities can be found in Peking and Persian rugs, both available in the sale.
