Pairs of Antique Chinese Carved Bone Tusks and Satsuma Porcelain Vases Come to Sale With Akiba AntiquesFeb 14, 2023 12:00 EST
Animal bone and tusk carving is an ancient art form practiced in China. Carved ivory articles excavated from the tombs of Shang dynasty kings are examples of this age-old connection. A pair of elaborately carved Chinese tusk sculptures with tessellated bone panels is a key highlight of the upcoming sale, presented by Akiba Antiques. It features patinated motifs of monks along with animals in relief in a landscape scene. The pieces are finished with patinated floral medallions and geometric patterns. They rest atop beveled bone bases with etched patterns. Another lot of interest is a pair of Satsuma vases. Each piece is decorated with two scenes. One of the images depicts a woman and child busy with chores; the other shows men and women socializing in a mountain village. The mirrored vases are embellished with gilt accents and foliage motifs.
The sale also features a pair of cold painted bronze sculptures of Zeus, Hera, and a peacock figure by Erté. Equally noteworthy is a contemporary polished bronze piece by French artist Georges Charpentier. It portrays an abstract, elongated woman with striking curves, finished with gold tone.
