Phyllis Wheatly was the first Black American author of a published poetry book. Forced into slavery when she was seven, her work revolved around classical, abstract, and religious themes. Her poems also consisted of elegies and dedications to notable personalities. The upcoming African Americana auction, offered by Hindman, presents a book by Phyllis Wheatly. Poems On Various Subjects, Religious And Moral was published on September 1, 1773. The book was well-received in America and England. Wheatly’s work received recognition from George Washington, and fellow writer Jupiter Hammon also commended Wheatly’s writings. The available book, published by Archibald Bell, features a portrait of Wheatly on the front page. He is notable for documenting the changes in the social life of Harlem, New York’s majority Black neighborhood. An earthenware pottery style called Satsuma ware comes from the province of Satsuma on Kyushu, the third-largest island in Japan. A distinctive form of Japanese pottery, Satsuma wares were created during the Meiji period (1868 – 1912). Korean potters, known for their exceptional skills, built the first kilns in the province in the late 16th century, primarily for the production of stoneware in a thick dark glaze. In the mid-19th century, an attractive style of pottery with an appealing design was developed, called Old Satsuma, which found immediate popularity with overseas buyers. With gold highlights, Old Satsuma is characterized by a creamy yellow background adorned with red, green, blue, and orange colors. One such Satsuma pottery piece decorated in the Old Satsuma style is a key highlight of the upcoming sale from Akiba Galleries. Albert Pinkham Ryder (1847 – 1917) wanted to achieve immortality with the square canvas in a box of colors. Ryder was born in a bustling whaling port of Massachusetts during the 19th century. He had an intimate connection with the sea and began painting landscapes in early childhood. Although his family moved to New York where he received formal education in art, he was known to be eccentric in the manner he painted and carried himself. Ryder became a founding member of the Society of American Artists, a loosely organized group whose work did not conform to the academic standards of the day. Last Load, a rare oil painting on mahogany panel by Albert Pinkham Ryder, leads the upcoming Mid-Winter Antique Sale from Wiederseim Associates, Inc.
