American visual artist Alice Neel was famous for her portraits depicting acquaintances, strangers, and family. During the late 1960s and early ‘70s, she became an icon of the women’s movement. A watercolor self-portrait by Neel is a key highlight of the upcoming sale from Nye & Co. With her intense use of colors and emotional richness, the artist completed the portrait in an expressionistic style. Neel became famous for her figurative paintings at a time when abstraction was in prominence. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter presented Neel with a National Women’s Caucus for Art award for outstanding achievement.

Another noteworthy artwork in this sale is attributed to René Pierre Charles Princeteau. He was renowned for his horse paintings, hunting scenes, racing images, landscapes, and equestrian portraits. Phillips Offers Contemporary Art by Mickalene Thomas, Titus Kaphar, Christopher Wool, and More

Mickalene Thomas Clarivel #7

The upcoming New Now sale, presented by Phillips, samples from the cutting edge of ultra-contemporary art. Notable works include a mixed media on canvas by Mickalene Thomas and a mixed media on etched magnesium by Frank Stella. Thomas’ available work is titled Clarivel #7 and was executed in 2019. Like many of Thomas’ paintings and collages, this work is a celebration of beauty, individuality, and confidence. To depict a woman easily reclining on a chaise lounge, the present work uses shades of gray and tan, as well as techniques borrowed from Cubism, Impressionism, and Blaxploitation cinema.

Titus Kaphar’s Both King and Accomplice will also cross the auction block this March. This 2008 piece is composed of an oil on canvas painting, a tar-covered steel container, and a wood base. The black container partially obscures a portrait of a white man wearing a hat. Kaphar’s art often handles themes of both rewriting and obscuring history. Kaphar considers these issues by covering his subjects or adding voids to mark the absence of Black figures in Western art history. The upcoming Phillips event will highlight additional works by Robert Nava, Christopher Wool, and Emma Webster. A selection of lots in the catalog will benefit Foster Pride, a nonprofit organization that empowers and supports teenagers in foster care. Collar necklaces or chokers trace back their origins to nearly 2,500 BCE. While the Sumerians were the first ones to wear collar necklaces, the Pharaohs in Egyptian culture also valued them. A 14-karat white gold ring studded with a pear-shaped natural diamond also leads the catalog. The tear-drop or pear-shaped diamond was invented in 1475, the year when a Flemish diamond cutter, Lodewyk van Bercken, invented a diamond-polishing wheel. Also known as a scaif, it enabled him to place facets onto the rough surface of a diamond. This eventually paved way for crafting more complex cuts such as the pear shape.
