Many music enthusiasts consider Bob Dylan’s 1964 show at Philharmonic Hall, New York to be the greatest performance of his early career. It marked a significant transition from Dylan’s war protests to more personal music. Potter & Potter Auctions’ upcoming sale will feature the first print of the poster of this momentous concert. Measuring 21.5 by 14 inches, the poster has creasing on the corners, occasional edge wear, and soiling at margins. Another key highlight is a collection of Super Magician Comics, starring Harry Blackstone (Volume 1-11). With cream and off-white to white pages, it features art by Jack Binder, Jack Farr, James Hammon, John Meditz, and Charles Boland. The story was penned by Ed Gruskin, Bruce Elliot, Maxwell Grant, and Edna Hall.

An autographed album featuring an original onstage photo of The Beatles also leads the offerings. It consists of a yellow sheet signed by Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and John Lennon. Elsa Peretti, a former model and designer, crafted a budget diamond chain for women in the 1970s. On seeing the design, her fashion designer friend Halston dubbed it ‘Diamonds by the Yard.’ The phrase refers to a thin, long neck chain with diamonds spaced out along its length to create a continuous strand of sparkle. A platinum Diamond by the Yard necklace is a key highlight of the upcoming sale from Intervendue. The piece is set with 323 diamonds and measures 87 inches in length. Another striking diamond lot in the sale is a platinum bracelet. It is designed with 55 diamonds, weighing approximately 21.4 carats, and 68 diamonds, weighing around 26.5 carats. The bracelet is fashioned in three rows with baguette-cut diamonds in the middle and a row of round-cut ones on either side.

A vintage Oscar Heyman platinum bracelet also leads the listings. It is studded with 132 round diamonds, 20 baguette diamonds and 27 sapphires. The company is best known for specializing in the use of colored gemstones. Billings Presents Claude Conover Vessel and Modern Furniture This March

A Cleveland-based artist, Claude Conover worked as a commercial designer for decades before embracing art as a second career. He dedicated himself to large clay pots covered in stripes, hatch marks, and other symbols. One of Conover’s large vessels will come to auction with Billings this March. Measuring 21 inches high, this glazed stoneware vessel was created in 1981 and titled Ahau. The two-toned piece features innumerable dots and scratches, adding texture and visual interest. The upcoming Billings sale also features fine artworks by noted 20th-century artists such as Raymond Pettibon and Keith Haring. The catalog features a printer’s proof silkscreen of Pettibon’s Untitled (Play Ball) from 1989. This minimalist composition shows a baseball player swinging his bat under a sardonic statement: “Life is a misery and I do not know when death may come. ‘Play ball!’” 

The auction catalog also includes a selection of furniture by designers such as Pierre Jeanneret, Lina Bo Bardi, and Viggo Boesen. Among the top lots is a set of two circa 1953 Committee chairs by Jeanneret for the planned city Chandigarh. Made with a teak base, these chairs feature black fabric upholstery. Additional lots of interest include a stoneware mural by Stan Bitters, a Karl Springer-style Atlantic sofa, and a Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe daybed. David Johnson was a self-taught painter famous for his landscape and cattle art paintings. His works are notable for their creativity, accuracy, rich palette, and extensive research. The upcoming sale from Brunk Auctions presents an oil painting by David Johnson. View of West Point from Fort Putnam portrays the French Barbizon School’s influence on his work. The available painting demonstrates Johnson’s signature airy brushstrokes. Another notable lot in the sale is a dyed tooled leather artwork by Winfred Rembert. Titled Chain Gang Picking Cotton #3, it represents memories of Rembert’s childhood. Winfred Rembert began creating art when he was 52. The artist utilized hand tools, shoe dye, and leather canvas to create these visual artworks. His works portray how one can endure harsh conditions and yet be optimistic. Rembert’s autobiographical art is noteworthy for its vibrant colors and repetitive patterns. 

The auction also highlights a bronze sculpture by Hermon Atkins MacNeil. Primitive Chant to the Great Spirit is a sculpture of a Sioux warrior named Black Pipe. The 1901 sculpture depicts Black Pipe performing a dance. It portrays religious memories of Black Pipe and MacNeil’s blissful experience while creating the piece. The catalog offers multiple rugs, including a Shekarlu Qashqai rug. The Shekarlus were not available commercially due to their household usage. These rare rugs are sought-after among collectors. The available 20th-century Shekarlu rug features signature peacocks and animal motifs. It has a typical S-pattern white geometric border. URDE Fine Art Auction of Pembroke Pines, FL will present the Premier Photography, Prints & Multiples Auction in mid-March 2023. The upcoming event will offer over 760 lots of Modern, Pop, and contemporary fine art. Leading the sale is an acrylic painting by Peter Max, titled New Moon. This 2004 piece depicts a colorful figure holding an umbrella in a natural setting. In the background, a rainbow-colored sphere hovers above the horizon. The German-American artist got his start during the Pop Art movement of the 1960s before shifting toward Neo-Expressionism. Sound and color are deeply linked in Max’s artistic philosophy, yielding works that burst with color and life. 

Other notable lots in the sale include a set of four Hope screenprints by Robert Indiana. These were created in 2012 to support Barack Obama’s presidential reelection campaign. Each print is hand-signed and numbered by Indiana. Bidders can also consider an original acrylic work by Romero Britto, titled Loved. Sotheby’s Offers 15th-Century Nyingjei Lam Parcel-Gilt Silver and Gilt-Copper Figure of Milarepa

A premium parcel-gilt silver and gilt-copper figure of Milarepa from the Nyingjei Lam collection will lead the upcoming auction at Sotheby’s. The inscription along the lotus petal base reads “this silver image of Mila[repa], king of the sacred doctrine, was set up at Nyüg Peak by the monk Gagi Wangpo.” Preserved in excellent condition, this five-inch seated piece from Tibet dates back to the 15th century.  

A rare statue of Vajrasphota is another key lot in the sale. Heavily cast in silver and copper alloy, the sculpture depicts the ferocious avatar of Vajrasphota, one of the Vajradhatu mandala gatekeepers. The deity in athletic posture is seen holding a chain (sphota) between his hands. His hair, raised, is decorated with skull crowns and coiled snakes. Originating from Western Tibet, the figure probably belongs to the 11th or 12th century. A 15th-century large thangka of Buddhist guardian Vaishravana is another impressive piece. The artwork features the guardian in a flowing red robe adorned with jewels and elegant boots.

Leading the upcoming sale from Hindman is a painting by Chinese artist Liu Dan. The artwork Narcissus was rendered in 2002. It portrays a bunch of slender leaves and an elegant stem from which a cluster of white flowers blooms. It is one of the many flower paintings which Dan produced in the late 1990s while living in New York. Fine calligraphy of poems and ancient verses about the narcissus flower also appears in the composition. 

Another notable lot is a carved pale celadon jade Luohan boulder. The stone has a pale, even tone with intricate carving details. It shows a smiling Luohan holding a walking stick and seated atop a rocky grotto. The other side of the figurine features other rocks. A bronze tripod incense burner, probably belonging to the Ming or Qing dynasty era, is another key item. The burner in bombé form has a slightly flaring neck and everted rim. Auction catalogs spanning from 1939 to 2021 with approximately 1,130 volumes is leading the J. J. Lally & Co. – The Library sale at Christie’s. The 1,130 volumes include sales in London, New York, Hong Kong, Paris, Amsterdam and Monaco, most with original wrappers, some with original cloth or slipcases. Other notable collections in the auction are limited-edition copies of Chinese Sculpture from the Fifth to the Fourteenth Century and Kinas Konst under tre Artusenden (Three Thousand Years of Chinese Art) by Osvald Sirén. Printed in 1925 by Ernest Benn Limited, London, Chinese Sculpture from the Fifth to the Fourteenth Century comes in four volumes with the original cloth from the time of publication. The latter was printed in 1942 in Swedish. Osvald Sirén (1879 – 1966) was a Finnish-born Swedish art historian. His interests included the art of 18th-century Sweden, Renaissance Italy, and China.

From Hongda Zhu, Illustrated Catalogue of Hsui Nei Szu Kuan Yao: the Porcelain Newly Discovered Now Kept at Ping Hung Dong will be showcased in the upcoming sale. The book was published in 1937. The text is printed in Chinese and English. It was previously kept at Chengdu Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, and Suining Municipal Museum. Other Chinese books in the same lot include two volumes of Jinyuncun Hoard of Southern Song Dynasty in Suining, published in 2012 by Cultural Relics Press, Beijing. A 25.80-Carat Diamond Ring From the Estate of Lady Leslie Ridley-Tree Shines With John Moran Auctioneers

Lady Leslie Ridley-Tree (1924 – 2022) won the heart of Paul Herbert Ridley-Tree, the founder and CEO of Pacific Air Industries (PAI). Their journey together as the most prolific philanthropists in Santa Barbara since Max Fleischmann soon began. Their first act together was a $100,000 gift to the Museum of Art, followed by numerous generous donations in many sectors. A brilliant-cut, pear shaped, central diamond weighing 25.80 carats in a platinum ring from the estate of Lady Leslie Ridley-Tree will be highlighted in an upcoming auction from John Moran Auctioneers. The central pear-shaped diamond has a GIA report dated January 19, 2023. It has G color and SI2 clarity. The diamond is flanked by two pear-shaped diamonds totaling approximately 1.25 carats in weight and graded G-H color and VS clarity.

An Indian ruby, diamond, and enamel necklace from the estate of Lady Leslie Ridley-Tree is another notable lot. The Indian necklace features 20 tumbled bezel-set rubies ranging in size. The rubies are flanked with 230 tablet-cut (Polki) diamonds that are graded H-K in color and SI/I1 in clarity. The reverse of the necklace displays an intricate multi-colored enamel floral motif. Diamonds first appeared in the river banks of India. Since then, India’s terrain was mined exclusively for its multi-colored diamonds that has ended up in crowns and necklaces of European royals.
