Winfred Rembert’s Iconic Tooled Leather Artworks Available in Upcoming Brunk Auctions Event

David Johnson was a self-taught painter famous for his landscape and cattle art paintings. His works are notable for their creativity, accuracy, rich palette, and extensive research. The artworks mainly depict detailed Northeastern landscapes, making them fine examples of Luminism. The available painting demonstrates Johnson’s signature airy brushstrokes. Another notable lot in the sale is a dyed tooled leather artwork by Winfred Rembert. Titled Chain Gang Picking Cotton #3, it represents memories of Rembert’s childhood. Winfred Rembert began creating art when he was 52. The artist utilized hand tools, shoe dye, and leather canvas to create these visual artworks. His works portray how one can endure harsh conditions and yet be optimistic. Rembert’s autobiographical art is noteworthy for its vibrant colors and repetitive patterns. 

The auction also highlights a bronze sculpture by Hermon Atkins MacNeil. Primitive Chant to the Great Spirit is a sculpture of a Sioux warrior named Black Pipe. The 1901 sculpture depicts Black Pipe performing a dance. It portrays religious memories of Black Pipe and MacNeil’s blissful experience while creating the piece.
