An oil on carton board painting attributed to French artist Claude Monet is among the top lots of 500 Gallery’s upcoming Refined Art Revelry sale. Titled Personnage au Chapeau, the painting depicts a young person resting on the ground. The highlighted character is wearing a brown campaign hat and a white shirt. On the bottom left, a pencil signature “Cl. M” is visible. Monet, a founder of Impressionist painting, was born on November 14, 1840, in Paris. He is most famous for his Les Nymphéas (The Water Lilies), a series of roughly 250 oil paintings produced from the late 1890s to his death in 1926. Also available is a set of 27 small watercolor sketches attributed to Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973). The artist’s signature appears in each piece but none are dated. According to the auction catalog, the available works are in good condition.
Another notable lot is an unframed oil on canvas and abstract composition attributed to American artist Lee Krasner (1908 – 1984). The work measures 50 inches high and 20 inches wide. Krasner, who was mainly active in New York, studied under acclaimed artists Hans Hoffman and George Bridgman. Besides bold and abstract paintings, she garnered fame for her collages. Elizabeth Catlett’s Faces of My People is a figural bronze sculpture leading the upcoming Mexican & American Remarkable Collection, offered by Cain Modern Auctions. The sale hosts work by multiple award-winning Mexican/American sculptor and graphic artist Elizabeth Catlett and many others. Catlett (1915 – 2012) was best known for her depictions of the Black American experience in the 20th century, which often focused on the experience of women. Among the top lots is a Cheyenne beaded hide bowcase, quiver, and arrows set from circa 1860. Tanned buffalo hide covers the bowcase and quiver, which are accented by hand-sewn glass trade seed beads in a geometric pattern. The hunters and warriors of the Plains Nations have historically carried bows and arrows such as the present example, using them to both hunt food and protect themselves. The weapons are specially designed to be carried on horseback, being light, fast, and resistant to damage. Another key Native American lot in the catalog is a Plains painted buffalo robe from circa 1870. This robe is covered in an intricate pattern of feathers, which are arranged in concentric circles and tipped in black.
Key jewelry lots in this event include a 1970s coral eagle claw cuff bracelet designed by Ben Nighthorse Campbell. A 1972 Chevrolet El Camino is a key highlight of the upcoming Mecum Auctions sale in Dallas. Chevrolet produced the El Camino between 1959 to 1960 and 1964 to 1987. The coupé utility model was modified from the two-door wagon platform by incorporating the cab/cargo bed. Geared with the 350 CI V-8 engine and Holley four-barrel carburetor, the vehicle features Corvette alloy wheels. It is designed with red and black bucket seats, a vinyl bed cover, and a wood grain panel. Another noteworthy Chevrolet vehicle is a 1967 Nova Custom Coupe.
