Available from Sotheby’s this September is an extensive collection of Ming and Qing porcelains, early ceramics, jades, and other items. Among the top lots is a large yellow-glazed bowl bearing a Kangxi mark at the base. Under the Kangxi Emperor, large yellow-glazed bowls with imperial marks witnessed a renaissance during the Jiajing period. Ceramics produced under this rule established standards for later reigns and introduced innovation and technical excellence in pottery making. The available bowl has an egg-yolk-yellow glaze on both sides, with a deep, rounded body that rises to a slightly out-curved rim. Also available is a white-glazed stem bowl, a 15th-century item from the Ming dynasty. These bowls were made for imperial ceremonies during the reign of the Yongle Emperor. As a Tibetan Buddhist devotee, Yongle used these wares in rituals and gave them to Tibetan monasteries. The present stem bowl is characterized by its perfectly balanced profile, typical of the 15th century, and is finished with a lustrous white glaze, called tianbai in Chinese. It is adorned with anhua, or ‘secret decoration,’ representing the Eight Buddhist Emblems.

Bidders can also consider a peach bloom-glazed brush washer from the Kangxi period, a collection of Chinese art reference books, and a pair of archaic bronze ‘tiger’ mat weights from the Han dynasty. Bonhams is offering a rare 16th/17th-century Huanghuali horseshoe back armchair in its upcoming Chinese Ceramics, Works of Art, and Snuff Bottles auction. Huanghuali or fragrant rosewood chairs were among the most famous pieces of furniture from the Ming Dynasty. This horseshoe-back chair was a singular chair for the head of the household or authoritative officials, often positioned in front of a large painting screen, a setup depicted in both Ming dynasty paintings and woodblock illustrations. The most striking feature of the chair is the rectangular central cartouche on the back splat, which depicts the pictorial subject of Pinghua Qinggong (flower offering). Black splats with such representational renderings are extremely rare. The gracefully curved crest rail has five sections joined by pressure-pegged scarf joints terminating in out-swept hooks with a low-relief chi dragon. The chi dragons on this chair closely resemble the style of carving found on a dressing table cabinet from the late Ming-early Qing period.
A very rare brown-splashed Qingbai ‘Sheng Player’ ewer from the Northern Song Dynasty is also available in the auction. Figural water vessels are extremely rare, and the present example— with its fine details and well-executed iron-spot glaze— is one of the best in its category. The domed vessel is lively modeled and carved as a musician wearing a floral crown and a flowing blouse with floral roundels over a long-pleated skirt. Her hands hold a wind instrument sheng, which serves as the spout opposite the handle. The facial features are depicted with large ‘phoenix’ eyes, her mouth blowing into the tube connecting to the sheng. A blue-tinted glaze covers the piece inside and out. The upcoming sale at Doyle will feature fine art, Asian antiques, and furniture from the Montgomery County Lady Collections. Among the top lots is an 1887 painting by Susan Catherine Moore Waters. Susan Waters was among the first American women painters who specialized in painting portraits and animals as a profession, visiting towns to get commissions, a method more typical of men during the 1800s. Unlike her female contemporaries, Waters signed her paintings using her name or initials in legible, cursive writing. Her paintings usually featured detailed settings but also depicted figures in stylized positions and poses. The available work, titled Guarding the Sheep, is an oil on canvas and is signed by Waters on the lower side. Other notable works of fine art in the catalog include an 1876 oil on canvas painting by John Charles Maggs, titled A Coach Driving Across a Bridge. The artist gained fame for depicting the energy and tensile motion of moving horses in his portraits of English coaches and hunters. The offered piece is dated and comes with the artist’s signature in the lower left corner.
Another lot of interest in this auction is a reverse-painted glass chandelier by Danish-born glass artist Ulla Darni. Her pieces are unique works of art depicting the artist’s original designs on hand-forged ironwork. A thumbprint and Darni’s signature appear on each piece. Bidders can also consider a lapis lazuli and gold bronze clock by Caldwell. The New York City-based manufacturer specialized in decorative metalwork and electric lighting throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Potter & Potter Auctions’ upcoming Coin Op & Advertising sale offers collectors a glimpse into the past with assorted mechanical items of bygone eras. Among the top lots is an Edison stock ticker from circa 1900. This piece comes to auction on a cast iron base. Atop is an ink box, paper spool, and glass dome. A plaque on the ticker shares the following history: “This authentic old self winding stock ticker was designed by Thomas A. Edison in 1870. It was used for about eighty years for receiving stock and commodity quotations from the nation’s leading exchanges.” American inventor E. A. Calahan created the first stock ticker in 1867, aiming to minimize the inefficiencies of having messenger boys rush between offices with stock market information. Edison built on and improved Calahan’s invention by making it smaller and smoother to operate. It was one of Edison’s first inventions, and it helped catapult him to fame.
Elsewhere in the catalog, bidders will find assorted arcade games and mechanical curiosities. This includes a fortune telling arcade machine featuring a silk-clothed donkey that spins a ship’s wheel to tell the player’s fortune. The piece includes a marquee at the top, advertising the donkey’s powers to solve problems. Additional lots of interest include a French arcade automaton theater with ten vignettes from the early 1900s. Arranged in a neat row, these miniature theaters depict a cobbler in his workshop, firemen addressing a burning building, a farmer grabbing a pig, and other scenes. A red cast iron Mutoscope (an early motion picture device) from 1928 and assorted 1950s advertising signs will be available as well.
