Polish Surrealist Jacek Yerka was born into an artistically-inclined family. As a young boy, he preferred exploring drawing and sculpture to playing outdoors. The subjects of Yerka’s paintings usually include strange beasts and imaginative landscapes. One of his famous surreal designs is the imagery for the well-known science fiction film Strawberry Fields. Dating back thousands of years, a whirligig is a spinning top, buzzer, pinwheel, or amusing weathervane that whirls or spins. Although it is usually powered by the wind, a whirligig can be friction-, hand-, or motor-powered. American artist Jeff Koons is famous for his playful, bold sculptures and paintings. Born on January 21, 1955 in York, Pennsylvania, Koons rose to fame in the 1980s. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and graduated from the Maryland Institute of Art in 1976. His porcelain sculpture Michael Jackson and Bubbles from 1988 is still considered iconic. His other best-known pieces include the Made in Heaven (1990 – 1991) series, Puppy (1992), and Balloon Swan (2017). Spanish jewelry house Carrera y Carrera was created in 1885 when Saturio Esteban Carrera set up a small workshop in the Barrio de las Letras literary quarter of Madrid. Almost a century later, his great-grandchildren Juan José Carrera and Manuel Carrera formally established the brand. In 1960, the company was commissioned to craft the wedding tiara of Queen Fabiola of Belgium. The jewelry maker later expanded to the United States, Russia, and China. The upcoming sale by Robinhood Auctions will feature an 18-karat yellow gold bracelet from the Spanish brand. Adorned with floral motif metalwork, the bracelet is studded with diamonds weighing 17.50 carats.

An original mixed media painting by Lu Hong from 2005 leads the upcoming Modern & Contemporary Auction, presented by Robinhood Auctions. Raised in northeastern China during the Cultural Revolution, Lu Hong later moved to the United States. His art mixes traditional Chinese influences with Western color palettes, mediums, and styles. Lu Hong’s paintings have been exhibited around the world in recent decades. The offered work, titled Intellectual Fruit, is executed on paper and comes to auction with a letter of authenticity. This vivid piece depicts two lace-winged insects landing on an apple, held by an outstretched human hand. Shades of deep purple and electric green splash across the background, creating a surreal effect.

The upcoming Wright auction will feature the work of several influential artists from the 20th century, including Josef Albers and Larry Zox. One of the leading lots from the sale is an artwork by Richard Estes titled D-Train. Rendered in 1988, this work is a color screenprint on museum board. Estes was born in 1932 in Kewanee, Illinois. He is famous for his geometric landscapes and photorealist paintings. According to the auction catalog, the available lot is number five from an edition of 125, published by Parasol Press, Ltd., New York. It is the largest print by the artist and measures roughly three feet by six feet.
American Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein (1923 – 1997) rose to prominence in the 1960s with his groundbreaking comic strips and advertisements. He is associated with postmodernism and the Pop Art movement. Born in New York, Lichtenstein pursued music and art at a young age. At 16, he enrolled in summer classes at the Art Students League and worked under the guidance of Reginald Marsh. Potter & Potter Auctions will offer The Ricky Jay Collection Part III this August. Chung Ling Soo’s 1912 half-sheet color stone lithograph, A Gift From the Gods, is among the featured lots. Soo was born in New York as William E. Robinson (1861 – 1918). He created a stage persona of a Chinese magician for his performances. He worked behind the scenes for Kellar and Herrmann before finding success and fame as a magician. During his last performance on stage at London’s Wood Green Empire in 1918, he was shot when his bullet-catching feat went wrong and died shortly after. In the offered lithograph, Soo stands on a huge hand, descending to Earth from a flurry of storm clouds. Of the dozens of posters designed for Soo’s use, this is perhaps the best-known and was later used as the title of a work regarding the many images used to advertise his magic shows.
A rare book with illustrations of Tuccaro’s acrobatics will be offered in this Ricky Jay Collection Part III event. Arcangelo Tuccaro (1535 – 1602) was an Italian gymnastics instructor and tightrope walker. This work is widely recognized as one of the first-tier illustrated books of the Renaissance. The Trois Dialogues offers substantial details on theatrical dance during the late 16th century, and it represents the first printed work on floor exercises. The first Dialogue deals with Gymnastic exercises. The second contains several beautiful speeches about the jump called by the Ancients Cubistic. In the Third, there is ample discussion of the exercises that man can do. This book was published in 1599 by Claude de Monstr’oeil. It has a modern tan binding signed by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Gilbert Davis Munger (1837 – 1903) was one of the most prolific American landscape painters of the 19th century. Munger, a largely self-trained artist, was born in Madison, Wisconsin. He pursued art at a young age. At 14, Munger worked as an engraver at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. A Munger painting titled Mount Shasta (with Indians and Encampment) is available in the upcoming California & Western Art Online auction, offered by Bonhams. This framed canvas is signed ‘Gilbert Munger’ on the lower left of the canvas. It depicts the magnificent Mount Shasta from the west and highlights Native Americans on horseback. The available lot demonstrates the artist’s skill at painting panoramic compositions that are rich with detail and realism.
Another notable lot is Santa Ynez California Hillside & Grassland with Cows (circa 1969) by Eyvind Earle (1916 – 2000).
