American painter and sculptor James Havard was a stylistic pioneer. He worked on the cutting edge of Abstract Illusionism, a mid-1970s art movement that combined expressionistic techniques with hard edges, artificial light sources, and seeming three-dimensionality. Later in his career, Havard drew inspiration from Outsider Art and Native American art traditions. Available in Dane Fine Art’s Summer Sale of Modern & Contemporary Art is James Havard’s Tableta Section, a 1983 acrylic on canvas painting. The artist embraced thicker layers of paint and aspects of collage during this period in his career. Those elements are visible in the available work, which is composed of abstract green rectangles, paint splatters, and optical illusions.
Notable contemporary artists represented in this sale include Julian Opie, Jeff Koons, and Damien Hirst. Two Balloon Dog porcelain sculptures by Koons are particularly notable. Created in 2015 from a limited edition of 2,300, these works belong to the artist’s Celebration series referencing balloon animals. Heart Spin Painting by Damien Hirst from 2009 will also be auctioned. It is an acrylic on paper piece created with public collaboration at the Damien Hirst Spin Workshop to celebrate the opening of a Hirst retrospective at the PinchukArtCentre in Ukraine. Bidders can also consider works from Marc Chagall, STIK, Louis Icart, and others. Visit Bidsquare to view the Summer Sale of Modern & Contemporary Art and browse other online auctions.
Freeman’s upcoming sale, featuring works from the Estate of Sydney F. Martin, will present over 170 lots of American fine art by the likes of Charles Morris Young and David Burliuk. Leading the sale is a 1909 oil painting by Charles Morris Young, a Pennsylvania artist. Young was a prominent landscape artist of the early 20th century, and he explored many different subjects and styles over his career. The available work was completed after the artist returned to the United States from a stint in Paris. He frequently depicted sunny, Impressionist nature scenes during this period. In this painting, several riders on horseback follow a pack of hunting dogs across a sparsely wooded hillside.
Other notable lots in the sale were created by Russian-American artist David Burliuk. Sometimes called “the father of Russian Futurism,” Burliuk was a subversive creator who took pleasure in testing social norms and upending expectations, in both art and life. He experimented widely throughout his career, often dabbling in various techniques and styles based on the current fad. Presented in this sale is Burliuk’s Yacht Basin, a moody nighttime port scene in shades of blue and yellow-green. Bidders can also consider a brighter painting by the artist, which shows a line of cherry trees in blossom with a winding river in the background. Additional lots of interest include works by Guy Carleton Wiggins, Martin Lewis, and Frederick William MacMonnies. Find the complete Collect: American Art Featuring Works from the Estate of Sydney F. Leading Christie’s upcoming auction is Marlene Dietrich’s exceptional ‘Jarretière’ bracelet. This white metal cuff bracelet is set with transparent red rubies of round, single, and rectangular shapes. It was crafted by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1937. Pairing the Burmese-origin rubies are baguette-cut diamonds. It comes with a 2023 AGL report. The lot is housed in a custom Mark Cross case stamped with the initials ‘MD.’ A diamond and multi-gem ‘Moonlight Rose’ bracelet from Tiffany is another noteworthy lot. The oval-shaped rose-cut diamonds are placed alongside rubies, calibré-cut emeralds, sapphires, platinum, and rose gold. The vibrant gemstones form a picture of a rose reaching upward toward a moonlit sky.
A beautiful and uniquely designed diamond ring is also available. This important diamond ring features an emerald-cut center stone, weighing 20.54 carats. It is flanked by calf’s head-shaped diamonds on either side. The central diamond has a GIA report stating it has D color and is internally flawless. At the edge of the High Atlas, taking a lost path between two mountain ridges, shepherds from the village of Meriama searched desperately for early grass after September rains cooled down the summer. Halfway through, they stumbled on some distinctive solid rocks they thought were meteorites. They had no idea of the magnitude of their find. It was a white-crusted eucrite with flow lines and two fragments, which leads Bonhams’ upcoming sale. This eucrite is Talsint 002, a published white HED (Howardite-Eucrite-Diogenite) achondrite named Talsint (in Morocco) after the location it was found. This meteorite was dubbed the ‘Albino Meteorite’ or ‘White Meteorite’ before settling on the name ‘The White One.’ In a bid to preserve the authentic story, the name comes with the meteorite, along with the coordinates of the original location of the find.
Also available is a notable, museum-quality fossil of Lepidotus elevenses (Bainville, 1818). It is said to be a 180-million-year-old Jurassic-era fossil from Holzmaden, Germany. Lepidotes was a genus of extinct freshwater fish that lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Lepidotes had large, bony scales that were relatively resistant to decay and decomposition, which made them more likely to be preserved in the fossil record. However, despite the relative abundance of Lepidotes scales, complete specimens of this fish are rare. This auction will also offer a Dinosauria collection. This category is led by a museum-quality cast replica Tyrannosaurus bataar shoulder mount and a full Triceratops skeleton. An array of minerals from around the globe are sure to entice those seeking display specimens. A Rolex collection would not be complete without the Oyster Perpetual. This line of watches combines the traits of dress watches and sports watches. In 2020, Rolex released the reference 124300 collection with an upgraded size and a new generation movement. The watch comes with seven unique bright Stella-inspired dials, including yellow and turquoise dials, as well as “coral red” dials. One such Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch is a key highlight of the upcoming New York Watch Auction: EIGHT sale, presented by Phillips. The timepiece features a turquoise bright blue dial, an all-brushed stainless-steel case complemented by a matching bracelet with an updated design. Double bars are used on the hour markers at three, six, and nine o’clock, giving a larger appearance.
The catalog also highlights an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak “Jumbo” (ref. 15202ST) wristwatch. The Royal Oak reference 5402 was the first sports watch with an integrated bracelet in stainless steel and was launched in 1972. The Royal Oak ref. 15202ST is a modern example of the landmark “Jumbo” line. The case and bracelet of the available lot feature brushed finishes that give it a utilitarian look. Due to its modest width of 39mm, the Royal Oak Ref 15202ST is thin enough to wear comfortably, yet is large enough to read easily. Visit Phillips to find more information on the New York Watch Auction: EIGHT and to place a bid.
Although pear-shaped diamonds are perceived to have a modern cut, the style’s history goes back to mid-15th-century Flanders. In 1475, a Flemish diamond cutter invented a diamond-polishing wheel known as a scaif. The wheel helped him make symmetrical facets on a diamond, and very soon he created the first known pear-shaped diamond in the world. The upcoming Christie’s sale will feature a pear-shaped brilliant-cut diamond weighing 126.76 carats. Accompanied by a custom gold and gem-set presentation case, it is known as the ‘Light of Peace.’ The lot was previously owned by the Zale Corporation of Dallas. A blue fancy colored diamond ring, weighing 3.10 carats, is also a key highlight of the auction. Associated with regality and wisdom, azure is a very rare hue among fancy diamonds. Also of note is another blue colored ring fashioned with a rectangular modified brilliant diamond.
A striking Art Deco necklace from Chaumet, designed with square-cut emeralds and diamonds, will be offered as well. At the peak of the Art Deco period, the jewelry house was a leader in geometric designs, which was a prominent trend in the era. Spring Veil is an en plein-air painting by Edward Willis Redfield (American, 1869 – 1965). It was painted for about seven continuous hours and completed in one session. Spring Veil depicts a plunging view of the Delaware River with bright colors and life, in thick and short brushstrokes. The large scale of the canvas, paired with the artist’s bold and swift application of paint through colorful and contrasting hues, conveys a bursting and invigorating feeling of spring. This painting is available in the upcoming Pride of Place: Works from the Estate of Sydney F. Martin auction at Freeman’s. Redfield started to paint his first spring scenes in Point Pleasant in the 1910s. This painting is one of the artist’s boldest and more modern depictions of spring and a representation of the state’s landscape.
Another Pennsylvania landscape artist represented in the sale is Daniel Garber (American, 1880 – 1958). His oil on canvas titled Back Yard (1933) is available in this sale. In his mature years, Garber rarely painted outside the Bucks County area. This painting, however, depicts Chester County along the Brandywine River, some 40 miles away from Garber’s hometown. The landscape has some strong similarities with the artist’s usual renditions. It presents an idyllic view of a pastoral, lush riverbed in Garber’s signature shares of orange and blue. The large golden foliage and dappled water add to the romanticism of the scene, which offers a vision of an untouched, sacred Eden. Black American artist Grafton Tyler Brown was best known for his landscape paintings of California and the Pacific Northwest. Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Brown (1841 – 1918) was also a cartographer and lithographer. He created more than two dozen paintings capturing the beauty of Yellowstone National Park between 1886 and 1891. The recreational area atop a dormant volcano was one of Brown’s favorite subjects. One of his paintings, titled Grand Canyon from Lookout Point, Yellowstone National Park (1886), is a key highlight of this upcoming John Moran Auctioneers event. The painting beautifully illustrates Yellowstone’s signature features, its mountains, canyons, and falls.
Western Native Americans on Horseback, an oil on board painting by Laverne Nelson Black (1887 – 1938) also leads the listings. Warm colors and broad brushstrokes characterize the artwork. Black’s subject matter often included Native Americans, who fascinated him since childhood. The auction catalog includes a carved bird figure by Karoo Ashevak. Born in 1940 in the Kitimeot, central Arctic region, Ashevak was an Inuk sculptor. His works are incredibly detailed and innovative.
