Pennsylvanian Landscape Paintings by Edward Willis Redfield & Daniel Garber Lead Sydney F. Martin Estate Auction at Freeman’s

Spring Veil is an en plein-air painting by Edward Willis Redfield (American, 1869 – 1965). It was painted for about seven continuous hours and completed in one session. Spring Veil depicts a plunging view of the Delaware River with bright colors and life, in thick and short brushstrokes. The large scale of the canvas, paired with the artist’s bold and swift application of paint through colorful and contrasting hues, conveys a bursting and invigorating feeling of spring. This painting is available in the upcoming Pride of Place: Works from the Estate of Sydney F. Martin auction at Freeman’s. Redfield started to paint his first spring scenes in Point Pleasant in the 1910s. This painting is one of the artist’s boldest and more modern depictions of spring and a representation of the state’s landscape.

Another Pennsylvania landscape artist represented in the sale is Daniel Garber (American, 1880 – 1958). His oil on canvas titled Back Yard (1933) is available in this sale. In his mature years, Garber rarely painted outside the Bucks County area. This painting, however, depicts Chester County along the Brandywine River, some 40 miles away from Garber’s hometown. The landscape has some strong similarities with the artist’s usual renditions. It presents an idyllic view of a pastoral, lush riverbed in Garber’s signature shares of orange and blue. The large golden foliage and dappled water add to the romanticism of the scene, which offers a vision of an untouched, sacred Eden.
