Freeman’s American Art Sale Features Work by Charles Morris Young, David Burliuk, and More
Jun 06, 2023 11:00 EDTFreeman’s upcoming sale, featuring works from the Estate of Sydney F. Martin, will present over 170 lots of American fine art by the likes of Charles Morris Young and David Burliuk. Leading the sale is a 1909 oil painting by Charles Morris Young, a Pennsylvania artist. Young was a prominent landscape artist of the early 20th century, and he explored many different subjects and styles over his career. The available work was completed after the artist returned to the United States from a stint in Paris. He frequently depicted sunny, Impressionist nature scenes during this period. In this painting, several riders on horseback follow a pack of hunting dogs across a sparsely wooded hillside.
Other notable lots in the sale were created by Russian-American artist David Burliuk. Sometimes called “the father of Russian Futurism,” Burliuk was a subversive creator who took pleasure in testing social norms and upending expectations, in both art and life. He experimented widely throughout his career, often dabbling in various techniques and styles based on the current fad. Presented in this sale is Burliuk’s Yacht Basin, a moody nighttime port scene in shades of blue and yellow-green. Bidders can also consider a brighter painting by the artist, which shows a line of cherry trees in blossom with a winding river in the background. Additional lots of interest include works by Guy Carleton Wiggins, Martin Lewis, and Frederick William MacMonnies. Find the complete Collect: American Art Featuring Works from the Estate of Sydney F.
