Dane Fine Art Presents Abstract Illusionist Painting by James Havard, Koons Balloon Dog Sculptures

American painter and sculptor James Havard was a stylistic pioneer. He worked on the cutting edge of Abstract Illusionism, a mid-1970s art movement that combined expressionistic techniques with hard edges, artificial light sources, and seeming three-dimensionality. Later in his career, Havard drew inspiration from Outsider Art and Native American art traditions. Available in Dane Fine Art’s Summer Sale of Modern & Contemporary Art is James Havard’s Tableta Section, a 1983 acrylic on canvas painting. The artist embraced thicker layers of paint and aspects of collage during this period in his career. Those elements are visible in the available work, which is composed of abstract green rectangles, paint splatters, and optical illusions. 

Notable contemporary artists represented in this sale include Julian Opie, Jeff Koons, and Damien Hirst. Two Balloon Dog porcelain sculptures by Koons are particularly notable. Created in 2015 from a limited edition of 2,300, these works belong to the artist’s Celebration series referencing balloon animals. Heart Spin Painting by Damien Hirst from 2009 will also be auctioned. It is an acrylic on paper piece created with public collaboration at the Damien Hirst Spin Workshop to celebrate the opening of a Hirst retrospective at the PinchukArtCentre in Ukraine.
