The history of Sèvres porcelain dates back to 1738. This is when the Marquis Orry de Fulvy acquired the license to manufacture porcelain in the Saxon manner from the French King Louis XV. In those days, Sèvres porcelain objects were often combined with exquisite ormolu decorative mounting. Ormolu is a bronze gilding technique that involves application of a ground, high-karat gold-mercury blend to the surface. The upcoming sale from Showplace Antiques will feature a pair of Sèvres ormolu porcelain urns with gilt bronze mounted bases and handles. Each piece is adorned with hand-painted scenes of landscapes and courting lovers on a cobalt blue background. The covers are ornamented with pinecone form finials. Another highlight is a credenza inspired by Dorothy Draper. The rectangular-shaped black and white credenza has black lacquered corps accented by white lacquered paneling. It consists of three short drawers flanked by two cabinets.
An oil on canvas artwork depicting a classical scene of Artemis, goddess of the hunt, also leads the catalog. Most likely a French painting, it portrays three Amazon warriors holding bows and arrows. The front axles on this 1977 Bronco are Dana 44s, while the rear axles are Ford 9’s. Ancient Egyptians were obsessed with reaching eternity following the death of the god Osiris by his brother Set. Isis, Osiris’ devoted wife, collected his body parts with the aid of the other gods to restore her husband. Thus, Osiris became the first mummy and the mythological basis for Egyptian embalming practices. It was believed that the deceased wrapped inside the sarcophagus would be brought to life if their name was called again. The earliest known stone sarcophagi were used by Egyptian pharaohs of the third dynasty (about 2686 to 2613 B.C.E.). These were designed to remain above ground. An ancient Egyptian wooden sarcophagus front (circa 664 to 332 B.C.E.) is a leading lot in The Tastemaker auction, presented by Freeman’s. This sarcophagus was created from carved wood depicting a male figure. He wears a wig with a wide beaded covering over his chest. The male figure was created using pigment and gesso. The face is colored in yellow-gold pigment. The reverse is unadorned but with small remnants of the wrappings still attached, raised on a bespoke mount.
Also available is a Louis XVI-style gilt-bronze mounted mahogany pedestal regulator clock. This clock was modeled after the 1785 model attributed to the Studio of Jean-Henri Riesener (French, 1734 – 1806). The one available in the auction was created by François Linke (French, 1855 – 1946), with works by Dufaud between 1902 to 1910. The clock has three parts of gilt bronze mounts. The upper section with enamel dial is inscribed “F. Linke/ A Paris.” The back with a door revealing mechanism is surrounded by gilt bronze celestial putti holding garlands. The lower two parts include a tapered pedestal with a case door on paw-form feet decorated with floral garlands, urns, cornucopias, horns, and foliate motifs. Collectors can also consider fine porcelain and ceramics, luxurious Persian rugs, intricately crafted American- and European-made furniture, French and Spanish paintings, and glass works by Edward F. Caldwell & Co. and Tiffany Studios. View the complete catalog of The Tastemaker auction and register to bid by visiting Freeman’s.
Dave McGary was a renowned sculptor noted for his portrayal of Native American people. A keen interpreter of their culture and history, McGary set up a studio in Ruidoso, New Mexico in 1981. He is celebrated for his finely-crafted bronze works that accurately depicted the detailing of human form, including muscles and skin. He would begin working on a subject in his studio only after thorough research and observation, which involved extensive travels to the plains. McGary’s Touch the Clouds, a cold painted and patinated bronze sculpture on rotating wood base, is a key highlight of the upcoming sale from Brunk Auctions. The work is notable for its highly realistic portrayal of clothing and accessories. It is signed on the naturalistic base “Dave McGary 1995” with a thumbprint.
An oil on canvas painting by English artist Augustus Wall Callcott also leads the listings. Titled A Frigate and Fishing Vessel on the Channel, it is framed in original ornate gilt wood. The landscape painter specialized in river and coast scenery so much so he displayed only landscape works for several years. An early to mid-20th-century Indonesian woven Ikat textile is leading the upcoming Emporium Auction, presented by Brunk Auctions. The Ikat mat has a purple background with coral, blue, and beige figural and geometric designs. The available Ikat textile has designs influenced by imagery from Western flags, pictures, and coins. The lower edge carries Western-inspired figures in red, blue, and beige striped borders. This is a fine example of Indonesian hand-woven cotton textiles. Indonesia’s relationship with cotton fabric is strong, long, and dispersed. Across the 17,000 islands of Indonesia, the tradition of Ikat production was perfected over time with regional designs that still exist today. The Iban of Borneo, the Toba Batak of North Sumatra, and cultures throughout Nusa Tenggara – from Flores to Sumba – have a strong warp Ikat tradition.
An Asian artifact to consider in the sale is a five-panel Chinese fresco painting. Chinese frescos are recognized and sought for their artistic merit. The upcoming sale from Auctions at Showplace will present over 200 lots of fine and decorative art, including works by José de Rivera and Winston Roeth. Among the top lots is a 1980 brass sculpture by de Rivera, an Abstract Expressionist sculptor best known for his curvilinear bronze and steel works. De Rivera is renowned for Infinity (1967), a polished steel arabesque constructed from a steel plate and threaded rod. It is installed on the National Mall in front of the National Museum of History and Technology in Washington, D.C. The available work, titled Construction No. 280, is a kinetic sculpture in brass mounted on a motorized pedestal of black lacquer. Using abstract constructions, de Rivera explored space, motion, and light, resulting in commissions for the World’s Fair and public works for museums, airports, hotels, and colleges.
Other notable lots in the sale include paintings by Winston Roeth. In his paintings, Roeth explores issues of color, light, and space from a phenomenological perspective. In order to experiment with the surface extensively, the artist applies several layers of pigments mixed with polyurethane dispersion and water. Additional lots of interest include works by Mac Wells, Daryl Hughto, Gaston Sebire, and Charles and Ray Eames furniture.
