Dave McGary’s Bronze Sculpture and Augustus Wall Callcott’s Oil on Canvas Highlight Brunk Auctions’ Upcoming Sale
Jul 14, 2023 09:00 EDTDave McGary was a renowned sculptor noted for his portrayal of Native American people. A keen interpreter of their culture and history, McGary set up a studio in Ruidoso, New Mexico in 1981. He is celebrated for his finely-crafted bronze works that accurately depicted the detailing of human form, including muscles and skin. He would begin working on a subject in his studio only after thorough research and observation, which involved extensive travels to the plains. McGary’s Touch the Clouds, a cold painted and patinated bronze sculpture on rotating wood base, is a key highlight of the upcoming sale from Brunk Auctions. The work is notable for its highly realistic portrayal of clothing and accessories. It is signed on the naturalistic base “Dave McGary 1995” with a thumbprint.
An oil on canvas painting by English artist Augustus Wall Callcott also leads the listings. Titled A Frigate and Fishing Vessel on the Channel, it is framed in original ornate gilt wood. The landscape painter specialized in river and coast scenery so much so he displayed only landscape works for several years.
