Claes Oldenburg’s “London Knees” and Alexandra Nechita Sculpture Lead Dane Fine Art’s August Sale

Claes Oldenburg - London Knees

In Dane Fine Art’s August Sale of Modern & Contemporary Art, a wide selection of fine art will come to auction, including 20th-century works by Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, and Louis Icart. Available from Oldenburg is a 1966 sculpture titled London Knees from a limited edition published by Editions Alecto Ltd London and Neuendorf Verlag Berlin. Oldenburg designed his Knees project during the mid-1960s, right as miniskirts, go-go boots, and feminism were on the rise. He viewed women’s newly exposed knees as objects of fascination. The artist created a series of London Knees sculptures in miniature, imagining them as vast public sculptures that would one day pepper London. This never came to pass, remaining an unrealized dream.

Contemporary works in the auction catalog include a Damien Hirst Heart Spin Painting from 2009, which bursts with shades of aqua, navy, violet, and gold. Bidders can also consider a stainless steel sculpture by Romanian-American Cubist artist Alexandra Nechita. This piece includes Cubist elements, depicting a woman holding leaves and a flower while gazing down at herself. Additional works by Mr. Brainwash, Robert Indiana, Hebru Brantley, and Gary Mirabelle round out the catalog. Significant Oil on Masonite Paintings by 19th-20th Century Massachusetts Artists Highlight Rafael Osona Auctions’ Upcoming Sale

Ralph Eugene Cahoon Jr. Oil on Masonite Title: American Seamen's Friend Society

Born in Chatham, Massachusetts, artist Ralph Eugene Cahoon, Jr. spent most of his time sailing, fishing and sketching coastal life. He would illustrate imaginative scenes of mermaids and sailors in whimsical settings. The lighthearted portrayals in his paintings appealed to wealthy and well-to-do patrons. One such oil on Masonite work by Ralph Cahoon is a key highlight of the upcoming sale from Rafael Osona Auctions. Titled American Seamen’s Friend Society, it depicts two captains seated and relishing an exquisite dinner served by two mermaids. The captains are apparently discussing their forthcoming voyage on the ship Dashing Wave to Hong Kong, Canton, and Calcutta, departing Derby Wharf on May 4, 1841.

Two other oil on Masonite paintings also lead the catalog. An available work titled Hanging the Nets by Elizabeth Rebecca Coffin won the Norman W. Dodge Prize at the National Academy of Design in 1892. Ahead of her time, Coffin made choices considered unconventional for women back then. Middle Moors, Nantucket by Anne Ramsdell Congdon is a noteworthy landscape work in the sale. Anne was an important member of the Art Colony on the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts. Porsche and Maserati Lead Upcoming NY Elizabeth Auction

Porsche 964 Carrera 4 Wide-Body Coupe

Claude Monet’s Portrait, Georgia O’Keeffe’s Alligator Pears in 500 Gallery’s Decorative Elegance Sale

Claude Monet, Attributed: Personnage au Chapeau

A Claude Monet-attributed work titled Personnage au Chapeau is a leading lot in the Decorative Elegance Auction, presented by 500 Gallery. It is an 1867 oil on carton board bearing several interesting marks, stamps, and inscriptions, signed “Cl. M.” Monet (French, 1840 – 1926) often found himself in financial difficulties. Monet’s paintings were often rejected and were not a commercial success during his early years. After the birth of their first child, Monet and his first wife, Camille Doncieux, experienced financial hardship and despair. This unfinished portrait likely dates from this time. Commissioned portraits generated occasional income more rapidly for Monet. The available portrait depicts a young person wearing a hat and a white shirt. The hat creates a shadow, offering a strange look to the character, whose eyes do not appear immediately to the viewer. Another notable painting in the sale is Alligator Pears, which is attributed to Georgia O’Keeffe (American, 1887 – 1986). It is a 1920s oil on sack cloth by the American modernist painter known as the Mother of Modernism.

A work after Frida Kahlo’s vibrant self-portrait with a monkey is another notable lot. It is a 1947 oil on canvas, framed in gilt, signed and dated with an import sticker from South America. Kahlo (Mexican, 1907 – 1954) often expressed her struggles through art, exploring themes such as identity, gender, and Mexican culture. Her unique style combined Surrealism, folk art, and symbolism, often featuring self-portraits that vividly depicted her pain and resilience. Kahlo’s artworks continue to inspire and influence artists worldwide, leaving a lasting legacy in the art world. Striking Yssima Nini Ferrucci Rug and Antique Sewan Kazak Carpet Come to Sale With 1stbid

Mid-Century Yssima Nini Ferrucci Rug 5’7" x 7’10” (1.70 x 2.39 M)

The ancient rug making tradition in Tibet goes back hundreds of years. Tibetan carpets were originally made of wool called changpel, which comes from the highland sheep. These rugs are used for varied purposes, including flooring, wall hangings, horse saddles and seating. The knotting technique used in Tibet is considered to be distinct from the carpet-making crafts in the rest of the world. However, the Tibetan rug weaving industry declined after the Chinese invasion in 1959. It revived in the 1970s but not in Tibet, instead in Nepal. A mid-century Tibetan-Nepalese brand Yssima Nini Ferrucci room-sized rug is a key highlight of the upcoming sale, offered by 1stbid. A combination of bright and muted colors, the Chinese-styled carpet is designed with abstract and asymmetrical zebra-striped patterns.

Another noteworthy carpet is an antique Sewan Kazak piece from Armenia, South West Caucasus. Woven with bold patterns in natural hues, the rug is adorned with geometric and medallion designs in a prayer directional layout. Primarily made in villages, the Caucasian rugs are woven with materials sourced from tribal provinces. Saint-Gaudens $20 Gold Double Eagle Coins and Antique Furniture Lead Upcoming Millea Bros. Ltd Sale

1925 Saint-Gaudens $20 Gold Double Eagles (2)

The Saint-Gaudens double eagle is a $20 gold coin regarded as the most attractive in the history of American coinage. Named after its designer, the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, it was struck by the United States Mint between 1907 and 1933. A pair of 1925 Saint-Gaudens $20 gold double eagle coins is a key highlight of the upcoming sale from Millea Bros. Ltd. Measuring 34mm in diameter, the gold coins weigh approximately 34 grams each. With many of the double eagles melted by the government in the 1930s, it is estimated that fewer than 2,000 Saint-Gaudens double eagle coins exist today.

An antique mahogany and tulipwood console desserte leads the furniture section of the catalog. It is fashioned with a Breche d’Alep marble top, single drawer, four fluted legs and a marble under-tier with brass gallery. The late-19th or early-20th-century side table is styled in the manner of Louis XVI furniture. Another striking antique piece is a delft blue underglaze white ceramic and iron hardware secrétaire cabinet. It has an arched top and shell crest, two shelves, a larger drawer above three stacked drawers and cabriole legs.
