In the upcoming Historical Manuscripts sale presented by Heritage Auctions, Bret J. Formichi’s American ephemera collection is on display. This significant body of literature, letters, cartes de visite calling cards, and Civil War memorabilia is quite extensive. One standout lot is a set of two miniature portraits of Frances Clalin Clayton, a Missouri woman who fought for the Union in the American Civil War. Dressed as a woman in the first photo and a Union soldier in the second, Clayton directs a defiant gaze in both.
Another leading lot is an antique map of Texas endorsed by Jacob De Cordova. This colorful work shows the continual economic and industrial growth of the state, as viewed through the eyes of a successful Jewish-Jamaican immigrant. Christie’s announces their Prints and Multiples auction featuring artists such as Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Richard Diebenkorn, Roy Lichtenstein, and many others. A portrait by America’s foremost portraitists is featured in the auction. Gilbert Stuart is known to have produced portraits of the first six Presidents of America. A Portrait of Thomas Taylour, 1st Earl of Bective (1724-1795), wearing the star and sash of the order of St. Patrick is a highly valued painting. From a wide variety of Asian antiques, the 19th c. Chinese Mangpao nine dragon robe is offered. The heavily embellished silk robes were worn by the ministers during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Morton Bartlett did not have a family, so he made his own. It was only after Bartlett died that the life-sized dolls that served as his family became widely known. In the upcoming Outsider, Fine Art, & Curious Objects auction, presented by Rago Auctions, one of Barlett’s dolls will be available to bidders. The girl comes with a chair, in which Bartlett placed her so that it appears she is daydreaming. “Day-Dreaming Girl” is the only figure by Bartlett that is not in a private collection or owned by an institution. Like Barlett’s doll, the other lots in the upcoming Rago auction offer bidders fine art by outsider artists.
One of the lots with the highest estimated value is Alex Grey’s untitled acrylic painting. In 2002, a New York Times art critic referred to Grey’s work as “psychedelic realism”, which is an apt description of this piece. According to his website, Grey grew up collecting dead animals in his neighborhood and eventually worked in Harvard Medical School’s Anatomy department, where he prepared cadavers. The untitled painting in this auction combines Grey’s understanding of anatomy with his interest in psychedelics.
Beyond paintings, another notable piece in this auction is a series of displays with taxidermized squirrels posing as boxers, “The Prize Fight”. Taxidermy was popular in the mid-to-late 19th century in England, during Hart’s life. Rago Auctions points out in their description of the lot that many of Hart’s contemporaries, even the likes of Charles Dickens, enjoyed looking at anthropomorphic taxidermy. Two intricate Christofle candelabras from prominent designer Emile Reiber represent a mix of Japanese metalwork and cloisonné. Nadeau’s Auction Gallery presents the first fundraising auction for Mars & Neptune Trust. The trust’s purpose is to educate the public about the military and naval forces of 18th century North America. The auction’s 182 lots are primarily antique weapons and both decorative and fine art from the 18th and 19th centuries.
A cannon found on a sunken Confederate gunboat during the American Civil War is the lot with the highest estimated value. The cannon was originally made in Pittsburg as part of a two-year shipment of iron cannons produced by McClurg & Company on a U.S. Army contract. “The South did not produce many working cannons,” says the Civil War Academy. “The cannons they had were taken, and then [retrofitted] by the Confederates.”
Another cannon available in this auction is an 1835 US bronze cannon. It was produced by the N. P. Ames Company in Massachusetts under contract by the US Army. At this time, the army was transitioning away from iron and moving towards bronze. This cannon was part of the company’s first shipment in 1837.
Beyond artillery, the auction also offers fine art. This includes a lot with two portraits of British Army officers, Coote and Boyd Manningham. The portraits were most likely completed at the same time and tell the story of two brothers with different fates.
