Since the creation of the classic rock group Steely Dan in the 1970s, lead guitarist Walter Becker helped revolutionize pop music. Along with bandmate Donald Fagen, the group fused rock, jazz, Latin music, reggae, traditional pop, R&B, and blues. Becker was not just a musician but also a prominent collector and admirer of art. This October, Julien’s Auctions will offer more than a thousand guitars and pieces of musical equipment from the Walter Becker Collection.

Property from The Estate of Walter Becker ranges in estimate from $50 – $15,000, with an overall estimation of $2 million. Within a selection of over 600 guitars is the Sadowsky Signature Model #1 that Becker performed with. Upon the artist’s request, the guitar has a flamed maple top and a grain center. Another noteworthy piece is a factory-refinished 1954 Fender Stratocaster, usually kept in the control room of Walter Becker’s studio. A set of three physical science volumes dates back to the 1600s; authored by Francesco Lana de Terzi, these books recall the mathematician’s work in aeronautical science. Many visual works are also available. A series of illustrations depict battle scenes from World War I, while Frederic M. Coca-Cola has been a household name since the 19th century. Originally, it was intended as a medicinal drink during prohibition where it was sold for 5¢ a bottle. Coca-Cola’s first outdoor wall advertisement was painted in 1894 in Georgia. The longest commercial Coca-Cola soda fountain was also in Georgia, at Fleeman’s Pharmacy, for 81 years. The John & Charlotte Yarbrough Coca-Cola Collection by Morphy Auctions represents the history of the popular soda drink.

Spotlighting the auction is a 1903-1905 Coca-Cola Chewing Gum cutout. This matted and framed blue cutout features a baby holding a wrapper with the words “Coca-Cola Chewing Gum” printed on it. 

A 1923 Coca-Cola picnic scene cardboard sign is also being showcased. This sign features Diana Allen, a nationally recognized screen star of the 1920s.
