The American Atlas was first published in 1776 in London by Thomas Jefferys. This atlas was the most comprehensive detailed and accurate survey of the American colonies at the beginning of the Revolution. The upcoming Denver Collections auction presented by Hindman features property from the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, including artists and weavers such as Robert Lougheed and Linda Nez.
Lougheed, a Canadian American artist, specialized in works of the American West. He was an illustrator for National Geographic and Reader’s Digest for more than 30 years. He also illustrated several children’s books and has works displayed in the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. Featured in this auction is a Lougheed oil painting titled Winter Was Ending. This painting depicts an armed Native American and two horses standing by some trees, the last of the winter snow on the ground.
Also showcased is a rug by Linda Nez. She is a self-taught, skilled weaver who specializes in pictorial designs. Jayer began operation under his own label in the 1950s. By the time he fully retired in 2002, he was noted for his contributions to Burgundian winemaking. His wines are represented in this auction with two lots from his Vosne-Romanee Cros Parantoux vineyard, one bottled in 1978, and the other in 1993.
The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti estate in Burgundy, France, produces some of the world’s most expensive wines. The estate’s 2014 La Tâche is among the lots with the highest estimated value in this auction. Highlights include a complete private collection of decorative and artistic books, many of which were produced by American printers on the West Coast. Among the books for sale, a fine Houghton Mifflin set of The Lord of The Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien stands out. Within the set, The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King were produced in the original prints of the first editions.
