The painting shows a Native American on a horse beside a flowing river and a jungle. Other lots of interest include the works of Ray Swanson and Robert Griffing, whose paintings of an elderly Navajo shepherd and a portrait of a Mohwak war chief are featured. Natural History

Fossil Fern from Ohio/Auctiondaily

It’s remains along with 4 babies are among many fossils available for bidding at Natural History offered by Bonhams

California & American Fine Art

JAMES FETHEROLF (1925-1994 CAMARILLO, CA)/Auctiondaily

On November 3rd, John Moran Auctioneers will present two auctions: California Living and California & American Fine Art. The California & American Fine Art auction features 60 pieces by artists who lived in California, most notably landscape paintings by William Wendt and Granville Redmond. Meanwhile, the California Living auction offers fine and decorative art that was either produced in California or stylistically represents the state.

William Wendt was born in Germany in 1865 and did not move to Southern California until marrying in 1906. His landscape painting, “Tahoma: The Eternal”, is among the lots with the highest estimated value in the California & American Fine Arts auction. Tahoma refers to Mount Rainier, which is the highest mountain of the Cascade Range in the Pacific Northwest. The work was produced on one of Wendt’s many trips from the Sierra Nevadas up into the Cascades.

Another artist with a notable piece in this auction is Granville Redmond. Redmond’s untitled work depicts local Southern California flora, including poppies and lupine, a plant with pea-shaped flowers. Despite being deafened due to scarlet fever as a child, Redmond attended the California School of Design. He is most well-known for capturing California’s vibrant flowers in his paintings. John Moran Auctioneers’ description of this painting includes a quote from actor Charlie Chaplin regarding Granville Redmond’s paintings. “Look at the gladness in that sky, the riot of color in those flowers.”

Meanwhile, in the California Living auction, among the lots with the highest estimated value is a Dick van Erp table lamp from 1911. Van Erp was a Dutch-American artist best known for his copper lamps, of which this is an example. Once he emigrated to America, van Erp mostly lived in California, except for a brief and unsuccessful attempt to make his fortune in the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush. Another notable lot in the California Living auction is a Mexican sterling silverware set from the mid-20th century. The set includes a kettle, teapot, sugar bowl, and other pieces. You can register to bid for either of these auctions on John Moran Auctioneers’ website.

Fall Fine & Decorative Arts

YANZHOU XU CHINESE/Auctiondaily

J.D. McClatchy was an American poet and public figure, a man who almost won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize. Beyond his work as a writer and critic, McClatchy also collected fine art. His estate, as well as several private New York collections, will be on offer in the upcoming Fall Fine & Decorative Arts auction presented by Butterscotch Auctioneers & Appraisers. Over 750 lots will be available, including decorative arts, furniture, Asian and ethnographic art, and silver. A private collection of antique Leica cameras will also feature.

Two significant lots in this auction are paintings from Yanzhou Xu, a contemporary Chinese artist. The first depicts an expectant mother, clothed in a patterned fabric that contrasts a peeling white fence in the background. A baby seated in a red chair is shown in the second painting, realistic in its style and bright in its colors. Both works were created in the early 1990s. In contrast to these portraits is an abstract work from Claude Venard, painted in the style of a mosaic or stained glass window.

Furniture and decorative accessories are included in this auction as well; standing out is a tall case clock with paintings of birds and a nautical scene on its face. A 20th-century elk antler chandelier is also a statement piece. From an antique map charting the conquests of Alexander the Great to a polished tortoiseshell complete with barnacles, this auction blends the influences of several collections into a single sale.
