The upcoming Carson City Coinage U.S. Coins Monthly Online Auction by Heritage Auctions showcases Carson City coinage exclusively. Operating from 1870-1893, the Carson City Mint produced some rare coins in the U.S., ranging from dimes to double eagles. The auction features a canceled die, one of numerous reverse dies that the Carson City Mint used to strike half dollars in the 1870s. After its retirement from coinage in Carson City, the die was canceled with an ‘X’ on its face and buried on the Carson City Mint grounds. Development excavations on what was the Mint grounds in the 1870s was done in 1999, unearthing a cache of buried, canceled dies.
Leading the auction is a one-dollar 1889-CC MS61 by PCGS coin. Another highlight is an 1879-CC Capped Die dollar with die chips around the mintmark. The 20th Century Design auction, offered by Skinner, presents nearly 600 lots. These pieces range from New York hotel decorations to Art Deco tables once owned by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The Barbizon-Plaza Hotel in New York City was designed specifically for musicians and artists. The hard work paid off when the Barbizon became a meeting place for notable figures such as Frieda Kahlo and, decades later, The Beatles. Available in this auction is a frieze panel from the hotel. Sculpted in this aluminum relief are three paintbrushes, a reminder of the hotel’s efforts to attract artists. Several lots in this auction come from the former owners of Antiquers III, a now-closed antique store in Massachusetts. This includes several French glass vases designed around 1925.
