Doyle presents the Mollie Brewster Broussard jewelry collection in their upcoming sale. This single-owner collection from Broussard, a teacher and public speaking coach, includes pieces collected over the course of 51 years. Among the featured lots is a “Lioness” bangle bracelet by David Webb. The jewelry designer’s animal jewelry dates back to 1957, a year that began his obsession with anything that could fly, crawl, swim, or run. The gold, platinum, diamond, and ruby bracelet resembles a lioness gripping her own tail. It is covered in almost 200 small, round-cut diamonds.
Coral jewelry is another highlight. A Tiffany & Co. cuff bracelet features cabochon emeralds resting on pieces of carved coral, all surrounded by diamonds. A Griffin clip-brooch by Cartier is another featured carved coral piece. This sale will offer necklaces from Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari, and Gucci. A selection of diamond rings, earrings, and timepieces from Cartier and Hermès are also part of the auction. Explore the full listings and register to bid online on Doyle.
When fashion designer Marc Jacobs began collecting art in 2000, his only background knowledge in the field was an art history class he took in high school. Now, the Marc Jacobs: A Life of Design event, presented by Sotheby’s, brings to auction over 50 pieces from Jacobs’ estate. Highlights include decorative furniture by François-Xavier Lalanne and Eugène Printz.
Representing Lalanne in this auction is a piece from his Moutons de Laine, or wool sheep, series. This particular sheep was produced in 2000, made with patinated bronze and wool. Lalanne’s inspiration for this series came from The Odyssey, in which Ulysses escapes the den of a cyclops while clinging to the belly of a sheep. Lalanne was interested in how his pieces functioned within a residence. “I thought that it would be funny,” he once said, “to invade that big living room with a flock of sheep.” Another highlight of the auction, a rhinoceros condiment holder by Lalanne, is one of the artist’s juxtapositions between wild and domestic life. Produced in 1978, the condiment holder also comes with the original Saint-Gobain glassware commissioned to accompany it.
Also featured are several pieces by French designer Eugène Printz. He was especially known for his work with wood and cabinets, both of which are represented in this auction. An available sideboard is made of mahogany with palmwood veneer. A commode produced by Printz in 1927 is another highlighted lot. Printz used Dalbergia nigra, or dark Brazilian rosewood, for this piece. Register to bid and view each lot on Sothebys’ website.
Fortuna Auction presents a collection of estate jewels and gemstones in the upcoming Important Jewels auction. Featured are pieces from Harry Winston. Every jewelry item by the brand bears slight differences in the cut of the stone and the style of setting. Available in this sale is a pair of Harry Winston diamond earrings. Brilliant-cut diamonds are accented by marquise-cut diamonds, all set in platinum.
The auction also features a Tiffany & Co. Art Deco diamond and emerald bracelet. The French-cut diamonds and caliber-cut emeralds of this piece are set in alternating stripes. Another highlight is a Hammerman Brothers no-oil emerald and diamond ring. The no-oil emerald does not require oil to enhance its clarity, thus increasing its value. A Mario Buccellati Burmese unheated ruby and diamond pendant necklace is a key piece. Jewelry by Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Tony Duquette, and Hermès will be available as well. Paul Newman Rolex Daytona watches are part of the racing industry, Hollywood culture, and vintage Americana. The first series of this luxury watch was often sported by Newman, the actor and racecar driver, and has since become a popular chronograph wristwatch for racers. The upcoming auction offered by Fortuna Auction is set to feature a 1969 Paul Newman dial watch with applied hour markers and chronograph sub-registers.
A Richard Mille RM-07 ladies wristwatch is another mentionable piece. The 18 karat white gold and diamond watch has a partially skeletonized face and teardrop hour markers. Another featured lot is a Cartier Crash limited edition wristwatch. The “Crash” was invented when Cartier craftsmen saw a colleague’s badly melted watch and were reminded of Salvador Dali’s Surrealist paintings. Timepieces by Audemars Piguet, Harry Winston, Patek Philippe, and Hublot will also be included in this auction. Explore the full listings and register to bid online on bidsquare.
The upcoming Hindman auction presents select Oscar Heyman & Brothers jewels. Among them, offered at the highest estimate, is an invisibly-set caliber–cut rubies, and diamonds bracelet. The upcoming Paintings, Furniture, Decorative Arts & Fine Rugs auction offered by Alex Cooper Auctioneers will highlight an untitled work by Atsuko Tanaka. An avant-garde artist active in the 1950s and 60s, Tanaka was a member of the Gutai group in post-war Japan. Prizing individualism, concreteness, and ambiguity, this group helped influence conceptual and performance art in the following decades. Tanaka’s untitled painting available in the sale invokes the style of Jackson Pollock, connecting brightly colored circles with thin lines.
Work from the West includes lithographs of Henri de Toulouse Lautrec’s La Revue Blanche and Marc Chagall’s Tribe of Benjamin Window. Several print sets from Norman Rockwell are also available, signed in pencil by the artist. Proceeds from those lots will benefit the Salvation Army. A collection of antique rugs will be offered in this auction as well, including a hand-knotted Heriz Persian rug from the 1920s. Visit Bidsquare to view the complete catalog and register to bid.
Abraham-Louis Breguet’s watches helped develop original movements in watchmaking, with lever and cylinder escapements. When Breguet died in 1823, he was regarded as a man who revolutionized the technicalities of timekeeping. The upcoming Fine & Decorative Arts auction presented by Morphy Auctions will offer one of Breguet’s modern tourbillon watches. Accented with a black stitched crocodile strap, the timepiece is made of 18 karat pink gold.
Among the highlights of this sale is a Tiffany Studios leaded glass chandelier. Red, pink and white peony blossoms encircle the cone shade of this piece. Another notable lot is Jean Beraud’s The Deposition of Christ. This modernized painting shows the crucifixion of Jesus, set in the outskirts of Paris rather than Israel. Common Parisians represent the traditional figures in the scene. To view the full catalog and register to bid, visit Invaluable
For Alexandre Noll, there was little distinction between art and function. In the early to mid-20th century, he created a signature style that melded the two. Beginning as a sculptor for Paul Poiret’s French fashion house, Noll would eventually focus his interest on wood as his chosen medium. In creating his “furniture sculptures,” he said that he wanted “to make of wood all that could be made out of wood.” The upcoming Nature & Form auction offered by Bonhams will present 57 of Noll’s works from his estate. Particularly highlighted is an oak sculpture from his late 1940s Traverses series. The piece is detailed with deep grooves and measures almost nine feet tall.
This auction will offer a mix of Noll’s decorative and functional pieces. A sycamore table lamp from the 1950s falls in the latter category with a sycamore body and a bronze collar at the base. Curved and wavy wood is the focus of this and all of his works. This was an unusual choice in the postwar era of industrial and man-made materials. The sale will also include over 20 of Noll’s ink drawings and oil paintings. Many of these pieces are untitled. To view the full catalog and register for bidding, visit Invaluable
The upcoming Fine & Decorative Art: Discovery Auction presented by Cowan’s Auctions will feature an assortment of American and European paintings, prints, furniture, rugs, pottery, and porcelain. Highlighted in the auction is a pair of 19th-century bronze sculptures depicting a Native American maiden and warrior in canoes, both mounted on marble bases and signed “Duchoiselle.”
Beach Scene by Jane Peterson, a prominent female American painter, is another highlight of the auction. The 20th-century painting depicts a beach along the Massachusetts coastline. Also featured in the auction is a set of six antique porcelain plates by Bourdois & Bloch. Made in the late 19th century, each plate is hand-painted with a gilt and floral garland decoration. Groups of cut glass pitchers and bowls, as well as Victorian mourning wreaths and funereal objects, will be on offer as well. Christie’s presents a collection of timepieces in their upcoming Important Watches and American Icons auction. Luxury Patek Phillipe watches are often collected for their controlled movements and quality. An available watch that has been chosen by royals such as Queen Victoria and Prince Albert will be particularly featured. It is a Patek Phillipe platinum and tourbillon wristwatch. Modern pieces by Richard Mille are also part of the auction. Among them, a platinum, tonneau-shaped chronograph wristwatch is notable.
The Astronomia Sky Tourbillon series by Jacob & Co. is a combination of Swiss craftsmanship and horology art. A sapphire-set, gravitational, triple-axis tourbillon wristwatch from this series includes a day and night indicator. Other highlighted timepieces include a Breguet stainless steel, chrome, and glass desk clock and a Patek Philippe 18 karat pink gold, open-face pocket watch.
