Baughman was an American furniture designer best known for his modern yet affordable designs. Featured is a pair of lounge chairs from his collaboration with Thayer Coggin. These chairs are made of rosewood and upholstered in rose-colored fabric.
A coffee table designed by Paul Evans is also included. This Cityscape table was produced in 1975. The steel and glass coffee table stands approximately 18 inches tall and 54 inches wide. Also highlighted is a Paolo Soleri wind chime. Soleri was an Italian architect and a National Design Award recipient. He also lectured at the College of Architecture at Arizona State University and authored several books on architecture. Among the highlights of the upcoming auction presented by Oakridge Auction Gallery is an antique Persian rug from the city of Isfahan. Dating back to the 1920s, the rug is decorated with an intricate floral pattern in shades of blue, red, and cream. Contemporary Isfahan artisans draw on a long tradition of calligraphy and mosaics to inspire their work, often creating detailed and brightly colored carpets. The upcoming Modern Art & Design Auction, presented by Los Angeles Modern Auctions, features art from Raymond Pettibon, Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha, Ed Moses, and more. Pettibon, an American artist, is best known for his ink drawings that combine images with text. While he is self-taught, he credits drawings by William Blake, Edward Hopper, Francisco Goya, and John Sloan as instrumental to his work. In the mid-1970s, Pettibon began designing album covers for his brother’s band. He went on to create cover art for bands such as Sonic Youth, the Minutemen, and the Foo Fighters. Highlighted in the auction are 23 of his works from A Yarn Spun to No Mend. These ink and watercolors vary in size.
Included in the sale is an Ed Ruscha screenprint. This 11-color piece, signed by Ruscha with Mason Williams, shows a gas station with intersecting signs that read “standard.” Also in the auction is an Andy Warhol screenprint, titled The Star (From Myths), and an untitled 1985 oil painting by Ed Moses. Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, one of the leading artists of the Dutch Golden Age, was among the most sought-after portraitists of his time. A draftsman and etcher, Rembrandt’s work explored the interplay of light and shade. His paintings are included in several of the world’s greatest museum collections, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Musée du Louvre in Paris, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The upcoming New York City Estate Auction, offered by Showplace Antique + Design Center, will feature an etching of one of Rembrandt’s self-portraits. Executed around 1633, the self-portrait depicts Rembrandt in a cap and scarf.
A lithograph from George Wesley Bellows’ war series is also highlighted. Titled Sniped, the lithograph shows a group of soldiers in a trench encircling a fallen comrade. Bellows did not see combat in Europe, but his images are based on newspaper accounts and other published reports, photographs, illustrations, and soldiers’ stories. Also available in this auction are jewelry pieces by Christian Dior, Karl Lagerfeld, and Yves Saint Laurent. A yellow gold, diamond, and pearl necklace is also among the highlighted lots. A hand-colored lithograph of Marc Chagall’s Nature Morte au Bouquet is among the highlighted lots in the upcoming February Fine Art Auction, presented by Barridoff Galleries. Chagall influenced the Surrealist art movement and was even formally invited to join, although he declined. In Bouquet, flower petals, human faces, a vase, and other forms fuse together to create one mass. Jan van der Heyden’s An Imaginary View of a Town is another highlighted lot in this auction. In the art world, he is known for his paintings of cities in the Netherlands. However, this painting showcases what the National Gallery of Art calls van der Heyden’s “architectural fantasies.” The piece was most recently at auction in Sotheby’s 2006 Old Master Paintings event.
Contemporary artist Rupert Garcia is also represented in this auction with his painting titled Mayan. Garcia’s political activism for Latino Americans impacts his paintings and their message. The Smithsonian American Art Museum describes his aesthetic as a “unification of the Mexican tradition of Rivera, Siqueiros, and Orozco, with elements learned from… the American Pop Art movement.”
Another piece influenced by previous traditions is Joseph Lindon Smith’s Queen Hatshepsut with Goddess. On a trip to Egypt in 1898, Smith met archeologists who were in the middle of excavations in Giza. The toy line was named after the son of Fred Lundahl, the founder of the company. Lundahl began his business by creating toys for his son, but he quickly expanded into a flourishing business during the 1920s and 30s.
Also up for bid is a Montblanc Hemingway fountain pen, the first of Montblanc’s limited edition Writer’s Series of pens. Montblanc designed the coral red and dark brown pen in the style of the 1930s, which was when Ernest Hemingway’s writing career began to accelerate.
