The Interiors @1600 auction, offered by Freeman’s, presents marine art alongside vintage timepieces, prints, furniture, and other decorative items. One of the available paintings, by Thomas M. Hoyne, is titled French Encounter. An American artist, Hoyne served as a gunnery officer in World War II’s Pacific Theater. Hoyne’s paintings specialize in the history of sailing vessels. Although Joan Miró was influenced by several movements, including Fauvism, Cubism, and Dadaism, it was the Surrealist movement that stood out for the artist. A highly influential figure in 20th-century Spanish painting, Miró was a fantasy painter, ceramicist, printmaker, and designer. In describing his work, the artist once said: “The spectacle of the sky overwhelms me. There, in my pictures, tiny forms in huge empty spaces. Another key lot is a men’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust watch. Released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Rolex, the Datejust was the first self-winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date in a window. The Annual Spring Sale, presented by Bertoia Auctions, is a collection of over 1,600 toys, models, and figurines from the collections of Dmitri Ilyinsky, Bob Weiss, Bill and Wendy Jones, Karyl Newman, and others. Antique mechanical banks are well-represented in the sale, including an 1880s Mikado figure from Kyser & Rex Co. To operate, a coin is placed under the figure’s right hat. Spanish painter and sculptor Joan Miró is known for his Abstract Expressionism and Surrealism. Michel Leiris, a writer and friend of Miró, described his art as “… a kaleidoscopic game of infinite possibilities.” The upcoming American and European Art auction, offered by Hindman, presents several of Miró’s works. The 1957 crayon on paper piece is among his earlier works. It shows characters with sharp-edged faces and hook-like arms.

Although Pablo Picasso is recognized for many things, he is perhaps best known for his unwavering eagerness to experiment. From Neoclassicism to Cubism, he participated in a wide variety of artistic styles. In 1946, Picasso visited Vallauris, France for the first time with Françoise Gilot. The town was known for its pottery, and Picasso quickly became enamored with ceramics. Soon, he began producing his own and gifting them to friends and family members. Titled Femme du Barbu, the white earthenware ceramic pitcher is colored with engobe and glaze.
Widely celebrated for his Impressionist snow scenes, Walter Emerson Baum used the plein-air style to capture the Pennsylvania countryside. A painting titled Pennsylvania Winter by Baum will be highlighted in this auction. The piece depicts a winding river cutting through a snowy landscape. Several furniture pieces will also be included. Python was one of two vase painters from ancient Italy whose names have survived with their works. Python painted in the red-figure style, largely capturing traditional mythological and Dionysian themes. Two known signed works by Python reside in the British Museum and the Paestum Museum. Highlighted in the upcoming African & Oceanic Art, Antiquities, and Natural History auction, presented by Lyon & Turnbull, is a bell-shaped vase attributed to Python. Designed for the mixing of wine and water, this vase shows a young Dionysus wearing a wreath with a thyrsus in one hand. In the other, he is shown offering a phiale to a nude and bearded Silenos.
An ancient Celtic shield from the fifth century B.C. is also highlighted. Produced from a single sheet of bronze, the design features concentric bands rising into a dome and several diamond-shaped perforations. The shield was designed to be worn by Celtic elites and displayed at festivals and religious events. Also available in this auction are helmets from various civilizations, including an Illyrian-type Greek helmet. Passed from father to son, ancient Greek soldiers prized these helmets. Featured in the upcoming Home Décor and Collectibles Auction, offered by Whitley’s Auctioneers, is a variety of Royal Doulton figurines and character jugs. Originally established in 1815 as Doulton & Co., the ceramics producer became Royal Doulton in 1902 after a royal warrant was given. Among the featured lots is a Sonia HN1692 Royal Doulton figurine. Issued between 1935 and 1949 and designed by Leslie Harradine, this figurine resembles an Art Deco Victorian lady. She wears a pink and white dress and is shown sitting on the edge of a green and brown chair.
An Aladdin’s Genie flambe Royal Doulton character jug can also be found in the auction. This jug, by artist David B. Biggs, is edition number 14 of 1,500 released in 1994. This was also the first jug to be decorated in flambe – a red copper-based porcelain glaze with purple streaks.
Other available items include an original French Art Deco advertisement for the Filver Company depicting a clown wearing suspenders. A prominent Pop artist of the 1960s, Andy Warhol experimented with media ranging from painting and sculpture to film and silkscreening. Many of Warhol’s known photographs capture the mix of individuals who passed through his New York studio. The upcoming Andy Warhol: Better Days auction, offered by Christie’s, will present a selection of Warhol’s photography work. Offered in collaboration with the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the auction features 60 selected images. Proceeds from the auction will go to the Foundation’s emergency relief fund to support artists who have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In Warhol’s own words, “The best thing about a picture is that it never changes, even when the people in it do.” This auction will include two Polaroid shots of Warhol and another of him standing with Henry Geldzahler, an art curator. A 1978 kinetic sculpture by Jerome Kirk, titled Four Red Rings, is highlighted. Especially influenced by Alexander Calder’s work, Kirk’s kinetic sculptures are finely balanced to move in pendular ways with changing air currents. The available piece has four red-colored circular discs and comes with a signed book about the artist.

A pioneer of Swiss industrial design, Guhl was one of the leading representatives of the Neo-Functionalism movement.
