Spanish painter and sculptor Joan Miró is known for his Abstract Expressionism and Surrealism. Michel Leiris, a writer and friend of Miró, described his art as “… a kaleidoscopic game of infinite possibilities.” The upcoming American and European Art auction, offered by Hindman, presents several of Miró’s works. The 1957 crayon on paper piece is among his earlier works. It shows characters with sharp-edged faces and hook-like arms.
Another highlight of the auction is a portrait of Ethel Moore by Childe Hassam, who was a pioneering American Impressionist. An important characteristic of Hassam’s work was the use of contrasting light and pastel colors. This sale features 98 lots of American and European art, including Max Weber’s Winter Twilight and a sculpture of Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham by Jacob Epstein.
