Jorge Zalszupin was a Polish Jew who moved to Romania to seek refuge during World War II. After studying in Romania, he left on tour to study Brazilian architecture. The post-war development in Brazil provided Zalszupin an opportunity to create his modern and sensual furniture designs. The upcoming Showplace Antique + Design Center auction presents T Invertido, a Brazilian mid-century modern sofa by Zalszupin. The sofa has caramel tufted leather upholstery on a chromed metal frame. In the face of a changing world, artist George Rodrigue sought to preserve the Cajun culture through his art. His Blue Dog painting series, based on Cajun loup-garou legends, led him to popularity in the art world. Often called the “king of diamonds,” Laurence Graff is a single-minded businessman and jeweler who established a global brand in five decades. Graff began his journey in the jewelry industry at the age of 15 as an apprentice at a local shop. Soon, he was working independently as a jewelry designer, supplying several firms across the U.K. He founded Graff Diamonds in 1960, a company that has since grown to serve celebrities and royals. Ancient censers were vessels used for burning incense, perfume, or pastille. Varying in size and design, some were made of simple earthenware while others were intricately carved in metal. One of the highlights of the upcoming Fine Estate auction is a cloisonné enamel tripod censer from the 19th century. Decorated with a pair of opposing dragons on a patterned background, the lid has an openwork decoration of bats and clouds. A cloud finial rests on top of the piece. Another lot of interest belonging to the 19th century is a jadeite openwork carving featuring a chilong dragon climbing fungus branches on a rocky outcrop. Described by friends as “the last of a breed, a true Southern gentleman,” William N. Banks, Jr. was a writer and playwright from Newnan, Georgia. He held a lifelong passion for collecting and regularly wrote articles for The Magazine Antiques from his manual typewriter. In September, Banks’ personal collection will be offered by Brunk Auctions. Leading the sale’s catalog is an 1857 oil painting by Hudson River School artist Asher Brown Durand.
