BUCCELLATI STERLING SILVER FIGURE OF AN EAGLE, 28

A family-run Italian fine jewelry and watch company, Buccellati was established in 1919 by Mario Buccellati. After the death of its founder in 1965, the firm was managed by four of his sons. One of the key highlights in the first session of the upcoming White Oaks: Single Owner Auction, presented by Ahlers & Ogletree, is a Buccellati sterling silver figure of an eagle perched on a tree stump. The large bird of prey is detailed with applied small gauge wires mimicking downy feathers. Another lot of interest is a Lalique contemporary glass vase. The “Languedoc” frosted green crystal bulbous vase is etched on the bottom. Well known for producing glass art, Lalique was established in 1888.

1500 to 1900: European and American Fine Art

Italian School- Death of the Medieval Crusader Tancredi

Simone del Tintore was an Italian still life painter known for his depictions of fruits and vegetables. The artist learned painting at the Academy of Painting and Drawing of Lucca, a Caravaggio-influenced school started by Pietro Paolini. It was only in the 1960s when del Tintore’s works were rediscovered. The upcoming Stair auction presents Peaches on a Tazza, a pair of still life paintings ascribed to del Tintore by art historian Mina Gregori. The Baroque-style compositions show the influence of the Caravaggio naturalist style on his art. The available works feature del Tintore’s popular wicker baskets filled with scattered peaches, mushrooms, and leaves.

Another highlight is a white marble sculpture titled Eve at the Fountain by English artist Edward Hodges Baily. Though he started with model wax sculptures, Baily primarily worked with metal in a studio he shared with Neoclassical sculptor John Flaxman. Also showcased is a portrait of Mrs. Isabel Stimson McBirney by Glyn Warren Philpot, a contemporary portrait artist. The portrait displays the artist’s Symbolist style. The auction also offers works from artists Armand Guillaumin, Jan Müller, and Wilhelm Thierry, as well as sculptures by Paul Troubetzkoy. Chinese Stamp Auction

1897 Red Revenue Small Figure Surcharge

After 30 years of disorganized mail delivery, the Chinese Qing government approved the creation of the first national postal service in 1896. The government ordered specialized stamps from Japan to commemorate the occasion, but the shipment failed to arrive in time for the opening. A small number of red revenue stamps were quickly overprinted with new denominations to correct the mistake. Now called 1897 Red Revenues, these stamps are highly coveted items among postage collectors. Several examples of the 1897 Red Revenue stamps will come to auction in Dallas Auction Gallery’s upcoming event. The sale features over 250 Red Revenues from the private collection of Walter Huang.

Chinese stamps are the exclusive focus of this auction. “Philately has a special place in Chinese culture, with rare stamps regarded as important cultural icons and treasures, just like art,” Jeffrey Schneider, the director of Interasia Auctions, has said about the category. Many of the stamps created after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China reflect this interest in cultural preservation. One cultural stamp on offer, printed as a souvenir sheet in 1962, shows Mei Lanfang in a performance outfit. A Chinese theater actor and opera singer, Mei was considered a national icon. Another souvenir sheet from this period promotes the early study of science. It shows a young girl reading a book while admiring aquatic creatures and the night sky.

A selection of stamps printed with the poems of Chairman Mao will also be included in this auction. Stamps predating the 20th century are offered as well. Among these are 1894 stamps issued to commemorate the 60th birthday of Cixi, the Empress Dowager who controlled the Qing government in her later years. The Scholarly Cellar of Dr. Gordon Ku

Petrus 1961 (1 BT)

More than 850 lots of wine collected over 50 years by Dr. Gordon Ku will be on offer in this Sotheby’s auction. The Singaporean kidney specialist began saving bottles of wine for rainy days in the 1970s while studying to be a physician in London. Over the years, he enjoyed building his collection and sharing it with friends and family. “Some of our earliest and fondest memories,” his children remember, “involve large and boisterous family meals, with the adults sipping wine.”

Featured in the event is a 1990 bottle of Romanée Conti. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate notes that while wines from the Romanée Conti vineyard normally have a less pronounced color than the nearby La Tâche, this vintage is more saturated. “The nose offers up sweet, clove, cinnamon, and blackberry aromas intermingled with toasty, smoky new oak,” says the publication. Collectors of Romanée Conti wines can also consider a twelve-bottle assortment of 2005 vintages from the estate. This includes one bottle each of Romanée Conti and Montrachet, and two bottles of La Tâche, among others.

Twelve bottles of Petrus 2000 are also available. The Bordeaux estate produces only red wine and no secondary varieties. Wine Spectator notes the vintage’s density, calling it “a pretty jam-packed core of blackberry, plum and boysenberry confiture notes.” Those interested in this or any other lots can read more in Auction Daily’s continued coverage and register to bid on the Sotheby’s website.
