Simone del Tintore was an Italian still life painter known for his depictions of fruits and vegetables. The artist learned painting at the Academy of Painting and Drawing of Lucca, a Caravaggio-influenced school started by Pietro Paolini. It was only in the 1960s when del Tintore’s works were rediscovered. The upcoming Stair auction presents Peaches on a Tazza, a pair of still life paintings ascribed to del Tintore by art historian Mina Gregori. The Baroque-style compositions show the influence of the Caravaggio naturalist style on his art. The available works feature del Tintore’s popular wicker baskets filled with scattered peaches, mushrooms, and leaves.
Another highlight is a white marble sculpture titled Eve at the Fountain by English artist Edward Hodges Baily. Though he started with model wax sculptures, Baily primarily worked with metal in a studio he shared with Neoclassical sculptor John Flaxman. Also showcased is a portrait of Mrs. Isabel Stimson McBirney by Glyn Warren Philpot, a contemporary portrait artist. The portrait displays the artist’s Symbolist style. The auction also offers works from artists Armand Guillaumin, Jan Müller, and Wilhelm Thierry, as well as sculptures by Paul Troubetzkoy.
